Potluck vs catering

Sharon, on September 19, 2016 at 3:41 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 66

My fiancé and I were discussing wedding stuff and he mentioned potluck. I don't know how to feel because while it may be cheap, it's generally looked at as tacky, requires lots of planning (don't want 3 platters of sweet potatoes no matter how good they are!) and difficult for out of towners (no kitchen and such) any advice?!

    Don't do a potluck. Don't do self-catering.

Look into catering options. Less stress, less risk.

@Shannon, go with your inner voice! They are tacky and don't you want your friends and family to relax and enjoy the day with you?

Looks like you already know your answer. Exactly for the reasons you stated plus you do not want your guests to bring you food, you should be the one providing the food! Get a caterer.

Look into local restaurants that offer catering services. I'm sure you guys can get a great deal. Please, please do not self cater.

Having your guests pay for a party that is meant to thank the guests is rude.

Here are a few dictionary definitions that should put this issue to rest:

Pot-luck: used in reference to a situation in which one must take a chance that whatever is available will prove to be good or acceptable.

Catered: provide food and drink, typically at social events and in a professional capacity.

Would you be willing to take a chance and wear a wedding gown from a hand-sewn collection that promised nothing while still hoping that what was available would be good enough/acceptable, or would you want to wear a wedding gown that was available and came from a professionally manufactured collection? If you wouldn't do it to yourself, don't do it to your guests.

No no no to potlucks. The whole point of a reception is to thank your guests for coming. Its like a thank you gift to them. Making them bring food is not a thank you.
