Postponing wedding again because of Covid-19?

Emily, on April 21, 2020 at 5:59 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 3

Hi ladies! I was supposed to get married on March 22nd in Orange County CA, which, unluckily for us, was the exact time when everything really started to ramp up with COVID-19. We literally had to postpone 6 days out - people were already in town and everything, but once the stay at home orders came we decided it was best to postpone.

We postponed to August 9th, which at the time we thought was a safe date. But now it's starting to look more and more like that date won't work either. Is anyone else in this position? If so, what are you doing? My FH and I don't want to postpone again, as it honestly would just hurt too much and at that point the venue would be associated with so much negative stuff. But at the same time, I don't know what we would do wedding-wise if we did cancel. We've discussed doing something small with just immediate family (who we know would come no matter what) but I can't even find a good place to do that (i.e. venue made for intimate weddings or even just a city park or airbnb). It's just a never-ending nightmare. Smiley sad

Truthfully I would wait until June or July to make a final decision but that’s just me!! Things could be different in a few months. As for doing something small, do any of your families have a pretty property for a backyard wedding? I would set up some tents and decor. You can always have a bigger celebration later on if you decide to postpone again😊

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’m in the same boat. We were supposed to get married May 24 next month the day we met in 2015. We were devastated when we had to postpone. We postponed to August 7th but fear we may have reschedule again. 😔 We decided we are going to get legally married at the court house in August if we can’t have 125 guest...then we are going to do a vow renewal next year on the same date. That way we don’t lose the 10K we already paid to our venue. Good luck hun ❤️

    Hi Emily,

I'm so sorry you're having to think about postponing your wedding a second time. It's super sad to hear you describe this would-be happy life event as a "never-ending nightmare." I'm feeling for you and your FH.

You mentioned canceling altogether, which is understandable. Have you considered pushing the reception out to next year (if that's an option with your venue) and having an intimate ceremony on your August date no matter what? Depending on how big your family is, you could keep it super simple in someone's backyard. I've attended a ceremony on a public pier (Philly), and I've read that some public beaches in CA allow weddings with a permit. (I don't know the cost of that, but the pier was <$300 for two hours with security.)

The general consensus for August weddings is that you should continue to monitor the situation and try to make a decision by the end of May. You're obviously not alone. Here are some other discussions with August brides:

I hope you can move forward with your August wedding or settle on a fantastic plan B! Smiley heart
