Postponing after you’ve bought your dress

Tabitha, on July 18, 2020 at 8:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 21
My wedding is scheduled for October 4, 2020. I’m in So Cal in my venue is closed and mostly likely will not open by October. Not to mention our governor just put us back to stage one *insert eye roll*. Today I received confirmation that my dress has shipped which made me for the first time break down and cry.

I’m 44 and have waited so long to get married to only feel like it’s all a big joke. Like you’re getting married naw just kidding. I’m looking for another venue that would allow me to host, I’m even considering my backyard. My question is has anyone postponed their day for a year and have their dress already? Are you worried about it not fitting?

I had a two-year engagement. Was supposed to be married this November, but had to postpone until November 2021. Just got notice last week that my dress is in. To be honest, I’m not stressing about the dress at all. I am actually super excited to get to try it on again! I think having it in my possession will raise my spirits and remind me that this is going to happen, even if not when and how we planned it. It will also serve to keep me in check with my fitness & eating! Try not to look at it as a negative- let it serve as inspiration & a reminder that your day IS coming! And just think, now we get to enjoy the title of “fiancé” for a whole additional year! It is such a short time we get that sweet, romantic title! Plus, I don’t know about you, but the longer I have to wait and anticipate something, the more amazing it is when that day finally comes around!

Maybe I’m just being a negative Nancy but I feel like everything is still so unknown. Like no one can put a date on when a vaccine will be available. Just like the flu it’s not going to just go away so how do you even pick a new date

I bought my dress last July at a sample sale in anticipation for my July 2020 wedding (now Nov. 2020). I’ve had it stored in a closet at my mom’s house for the past year. It still fit perfectly and had no change in color when I took it out for alterations this past May. I think as long as you don’t have a drastic change in weight over the next year and keep it in a dark room, you’ll be fine holding onto it.

I totally feel you! I'm 52, getting married for the first time. It was supposed to be this Oct but we moved it to next Sept. I've already had my dress for a few months. It is so frustrating!! I do worry about it not fitting but we didn't have much choice. We're in NYC and it's just too risky. It'll still be amazing when we finally do get to our gowns.

We just moved our 9/5/20 wedding to August 2021. Ive had my dress since December 2019. It was starting to get a little snug thanks to the quarantine weight i put on so I’m hoping to get my body in a healthier spot in the next year. I know it’s frustrating, but I wouldn’t worry about this one thing too much. Good luck!

I just picked out my dress at the end of June and we literally just moved our wedding date from 8/2021 to 8/2022 this past Friday 🤦🏾‍♀️. My dress is scheduled to arrive in December. I plan to contact the boutique to see if they will hold the dress until it’s time to start my fittings in 2022. Since I workout and eat pretty healthy I’m not worried about it being to small. But I definitely do t want to start the fittings until 2022.

I postponed and gained about 10 pounds after buying my dress (major stress eating and a new medication) but was able to lose it. Theres always alterations and shapewear too. I wouldnt worry too much about it!

Girl, I’m 41 and 1st marriage also. I know how you feel.
Engaged May 2019, eloped Nov 2019, postponed party May 2020 to October 2020. Now no wedding party because all the restrictions and just don’t want the responsibility of someone gets sick at party, so now it will be our and parents and us.
My dress has been sitting at the tailors since March and will start tailoring again in August. With the dress fittings, since you want to get 2-3 fittings to make adjustments, you can do it closer to wedding date. Nothing a good tailor can’t fix.

Lol. I mean my eating habits get horrible too sometimes. I just happen to be doing a program and on track right now. I know how much I weighed when I chose my dress, so I figured as long as I stay at it below that weight I’ll be fine.

Bought my dress in November 2019 for a March 2021 wedding, so I've had the dress for awhile even before all of this started. I don't think it's a problem having your dress that long. If you can have your bridal store hold it for you, that might be helpful. I bought mine online so I've just had it in a garment bag, laying flat on my guest bed so it doesn't stretch from hanging LOL. I think you'll be fine, but maybe wait until it's closer to your day for alterations, just to avoid having to alter it multiple times?

Technically, this will be 3rd and final try. So no party later on. Just don’t want to go through anymore anxiety next year. Plus, we want to start a family soon. I wish you the best of luck!

I bought my dress in December 2018. Then we had to postpone our originally scheduled 2019 wedding for personal reasons and of course have now postponed our 2020 wedding due to Covid. I bought my dress from a local boutique that has been fantastic. She has kept my dress in storage at her shop. Luckily it has a corset back so I have a lot of wiggle room as far as weight gain.
