Plus ones

Melissa, on January 11, 2020 at 8:43 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 82
I sent my invites out a week ago and just got a message from a “friend” of mine. She was asking if she can bring not just one other person (her mother) but if she can bring her best friend too? Please tell me if I’m taking this the wrong way but I’m kind of annoyed that anyone would even ask this question.

You are not wrong at all! This person should not be asking you to expand your reception for them, especially for their friend that I assume you don’t know since they were not already invited! It’s completely fine to say no to this and you should not feel like you are in the wrong.

Here is the crazy part. I have met the person she asked to bring as her plus two and...she knows I can not stand her. I got the worst vibes from that girl and now she wants to bring her as well.

Definitely not taking it the wrong way!! It’s your wedding and you invited the people you did for a reason! Do not feel bad for saying no, especially if you do not like the second plus one.

While I'm very chill about plus ones, there's no such thing as a plus two.

That’s even more crazy! It may feel awkward to refuse but I would never let someone you dislike come to the wedding! It should be the best day!

I'm super open minded and I have some poly friends. But even they would only bring one. And they're literally in a relationship with multiple people.

I told her no, that we have a max number of people that can attend and we invited that exact number. No room to accidentally go over. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Best I could come up with without flipping a table.

Unfortunately I don’t have a money tree so...there was no way that conversation was going to go the way she was hoping

In my opinion, it’s definitely rude. Weddings are expensive and it’s not your responsibility to have everyone all of your guests want there. Just say that it is only plus one and there’s no other spots available.

It was inappropriate for her to ask. Just kindly let her know that unfortunately your guest list has already exceeded it limit.

Wow, that I’d entitlement if I ever heard it! Good for you for saying no! That is ridiculous.

You're totally in the right to be annoyed. I've heard it happens all the time but there's no reason that should happen unless the invite wasn't 100% clear. That's rude. Not only to ask for 1 but for 2?!? That's bold.
