Please show me your simple wedding dresses to help me get over dress regret

Are there any simple brides out there? I purchased my Casablanca a few weeks ago with just under a year before my wedding. I really love it on me, it is beautiful in its own way, but I feel like it doesn't compare to all the lavish gowns I see out there. Example: I went to a sample sale yesterday to see if I could find my junior bridesmaid a dress, and while shopping for her my eyes were all over the place checking out the other brides-to-be trying on dresses. The way the sample sale was set up there were no dressing rooms, not for the modest, so I couldn't help but see all the beautiful girls and their dresses. I LOVE satin, I love the way some of the form fitting dresses looked on some of the girls. And here's me with a simple (but traditional A-line with train) organza dress, clean lines, completely plain throughout except for some minor detail in the bust and train, with Swarovski crystal buttons all the way down the back to the train. I saw my dress at the sample sale cont

For $500 cheaper! When I just bought it for $941 (great deal I thought) now $350. That isn't the part that bothered me so much, because I know I will be getting a brand new gown (it is being ordered) - so I tried the gown on again, seeing it was there and all, plus I wanted to see if I would be interested in any accessories that were on sale yesterday. When I tried it on, the crystal buttons were popping off the back, the zipper was stuck and not because it didn't fit, and there were slight lipstick and makeup stains on it. The fact that it was now cheaper and on sale didn't bother me so much because alterations to sew those damn buttons on and cleaning the dress would probably cost as much as what I paid for it anyway. The sales consultant and other brides commented it looked beautiful on me, it looked like "me" - simple. Another thing I keep hearing is "first they will see the bride, and not the dress first" - anyone dealing with similar? Who else is comfortable with their simple gown? Please show me pictures so I know I am not the only bride (because it seems that way when I see other gowns) who decided to go simple. I knew I would have dress regret ahhhhh ...

This is the dress that I bought in ivory. It was one of the first things I bought after we got engaged. My dress is technically a BM dress, but I don't care. I wanted something light and flowy. I am in the middle of trying to find a sash to sew on it to jazz it up a bit though.

$941 is a lot (in my eyes) to spend on a dress that you don't like. I'm sorry your having regret, but it sounds pretty Smiley smile

I am making a super simple dress with only minor alterations. I love some of the elaborate dresses out there, but I could not stomach paying that much for a dress I was going to wear once, maybe twice.

I get the regret. I forced myself to look at a lot of dresses and loved a couple that were just gorgeous, but in the end I'm way too practical to end up in an overly embellished ballgown.

For me, I'm keeping in mind that historically 'wedding dresses' as we know them are based on a tradition that is just barely a century old. A lot of wedding dresses are simply impractical - when we have to have discussions about how to go to the bathroom in them? it means that we've grown out of that style. I know there are a lot of brides that have invested themselves in finding THE dress, and I am happy that so many of them love their dresses, but that particular story is not mine.

Aww thank you Melanie and Enya. Your posts have really put things into perspective for me. My FH even keeps saying don't worry about being simple and not on trend, if I love it that is all that matters. Basically, what it comes down to is all the embellishments and heavily beaded dresses aren't me. I think that I somehow feel bad about it or something because it looks beautiful on others but it doesn't look right on me. When I tried them on it overpowered me and you couldn't really see me, all you saw was dress and heavy beads. But I love them on other people. @Enya ... that is what the bridal consultant said when I asked her why the dress was so cheap (under $1000 when I was expecting to pay up to $2,000) - she said that the designer didn't think it should be listed at a high price because it wasn't heavily beaded, it was simple, and just didn't warrant the high cost of so many dresses you hear about being so expensive. You both made me feel (as well as my FH, but a girls opinion in fashion is so much more important, lol) that is ok to be simple and it won't make us any less beautiful or glamorous on our day.

I loved my simply dress! It was inexpensive and I felt amazing in it. I think feeling like you in your dress is very important and I was truthfully looking to feel comfortable on my wedding day. I don't have photos to upload but I have a link to my wedding over at the knot.

Everyone loved my simple dress. I was able to stay way under budget, and i think I looked amazing. My husband loved it - simple sometimes works to your advantage in so many ways.

It's all a matter of perspective. I had a H of a time deciding on my dress because of many reasons. I sew and could have just about anything, and I love so many different styles. I consider my wedding look to have been a bit on the simple side. compared to what I'm used to seeing!

I love over the top dresses, but when I had a look like that on I felt amazing, but not like a bride.

in the end I used material that was beautiful and I loved, and followed my instinct. I pilled up cyrstals and lace that I like and just followed my gut and created a dress that I felt like a beautiful bride in. in the more over the top dresses I felt like I should be preparing to walk down the runway. not the way I wanted to feel on my wedding day.

do you have a picture of your dress? simple can be like a clean slate. maybe you just need the right belt or perhaps just the right lace applique sewn on is what it needs.

for me in the end it was about overall look and how I felt in my dress. and I felt like a beautiful bride when I walked down the aisle in my beautiful chapel venue.

that was my dream Smiley smile

btw- I had a pretty blingy pin that I wanted to add to the dress originally, never felt like it fit.

so at the last minute I pinned it to my bouquet!

I posted pics hope I did it right from my phone. No doubt the silhouette is classic, but very plain in comparison to today's styles. @stitching I felt the same way when I tried on all the heavily beaded styles, beautiful but I didn't feel like a bride, I kept saying the same thing - I felt more like I was walking the red carpet in hollywood. It didn't make me look like a bride for some reason, yet others who wear that style look like beautiful brides. Oh well, it is time to embrace being simple and know that I am in good company.

Your dress is STUNNING! Look on Etsy for a bridal belt to add to give it a little more shimmer. That train is to die for. Nobody will be thinking, "hmm that its a simple gown" on your day.

Your dress is also timeless. Stop looking at other dresses.

I much prefer simple dresses to over the top embellished ones. They just look so effortless and beautiful. And also in 20 years you are less likely to look back at the photos and cringe!!

Mine is a simple silk sheath dress with a bit of lace on the bodice. Im getting it made because the selection of sheaths in bridal stores is almost non existent! Its almost finished, I dont have recent photos though as I would over analyze them after each fitting appt and stress myself out.

Rhonda, that dress is gorgeous. What makes you think it's simple? The beading (or lace?) around the bust and train is beautiful.

I had a simple dress. But I also had a simple ceremony on the beach.

I felt like mine was pretty simple, even though it was covered in burn-out lace:

So sorry about the repeat post I was uploading pic from phone/at work not used to WW on cell. First of all, I love every one of these dresses you have all posted of your dresses! It really makes me.feel comfortable with less bling, and has shown me how beautiful simple can be. Thank you for saying my drest is stunning, I think I needed some reassurance. I think it is plain because it is plain organza with a little detail here and there, in comparison to all the other dresses I am seeing, and compared to all the dresses I saw.at the sale yesterday. From here on in I am never going to look at another wedding dress again .

I too had dress regret just a couple weeks ago and the fine ladies here at WW confirmed I was right with my first choice. I think we pick what is right for us right off the bat. I think it is important to be very comfortable on your wedding day and if you choose something that normally wouldn't be your style you may feel a little out of sorts. My gown is simple and I love it!

    Your dress is gorgeous!

Here's my dress. I didn't want anything with a lot of beading or details.

My dress is pretty simple in that it's just lace, but I added a ten(!) foot veil to liven things up. You could always add a blingy veil or belt if you think something is missing!

I too wanted something big and beautiful and fabulous, but I am both short and fat so all the cup cake dresses made me look just ridiculous. The dress I ended up buying was more fitted, with a drop waist and was NOTHING like I thought I would get. But I look fabulous and I love it and that is all that matters really.

I can't thank you all enough for posting pictures of your dresses. I will never second guess my decision again. Like so many wrote, it is so important to feel comfortable on your wedding day. One thing that stands out in my mind is when I went back the following week to try on the dress for the 2nd time, the bridal consultant suggested trying on other styles to get it out of my system. So, she brought in about 3 more new dresses that I hadn't tried on, on I think the 2nd one I was about to try on I subconsciously reached for the one I decided upon to put back on. Right then and there I said, this is my dress. That stupid sample sale yesterday made me have some second thoughts. Now, after you have all posted pictures of (and I mean it!) all these amazing, yet simple dresses, I am so sure I made the right decision and I am not looking back anymore. I seriously can't thank you all enough. I couldn't even choose between all the dresses you have all worn they are all so beautiful, elegant, yet simple.
