I purchased my dress for less than it's retail price online , after falling in love w it at Davids Bridal. I wanted a High-low dress, the dress I purchased was not "high-low" cut I was told it could easily be transformed into one. My Fiance's aunt, recommended a seamstress who owns her own dress shop across town. I went and brought photos of how I wanted my dress transformed and the lady informed me she could make it happen. I put the dress on and she comes at me with scissors and starts to cut the front layers of my dress in a upside down "U" shape. I was mortified, the dress was choppy and uneven, but she insisted she knew exactly what she was doing. She assured me that in a week my dress would be clean and perfected and ready for pick up, 3 days later I get a call that my dress is ready. I was excited to get my dress back, but when I tried it on , it looks like a 2 year old cut it, and the sewing is uneven and just horrible. My dress is destroyed! Now what do I do?

Mna - that was so nice of you.

OP. I agree - find a dress and deal with the shit show later.

Honestly if she didn't have the tools to cut or hem tule she had no business near that dress.

@Erin: I used to do a LOT of cosplay and I made my own costumes. Sometimes, figuring out how to piece things together to give the illusion of a whole piece was more effective than making it from scratch, lol.

In this case, it'll give OP her basic look for the minimal spend possible, and a quick turnaround.

I hope it works for her.

David's has dresses they can get super fast. Go tomorrow and ask them to show you "quick ship" dresses, or find them online before the appointment. Or go to a department store. I'm so sorry this happened! I hope you get reimbursed.

Frankly, I'd take @JoRocka's advice about the lawyer. And make sure you have all your receipts--for the dress and for what she charged you.

And I would never, ever take the advice of your FH's aunt again--not in a million years!

    ETA: spelling

@"Rachel": except everybody and their dog knows all about the terrible reviews from DHGate and how they tend to rip people off. I'm saying fake account.

She definitely owes you a new dress & although I think the alterations you asked for were pretty drastic, she should've been honest about her ability to do it or not. Take her to court but in the meantime quick ship from David's bridal sounds like the best option. They were just having a sale too. Not sure if they still are or not though but they can get dresses fast!

Just catching up! I'm so sorry, she should have definitely told you what you were asking for was impossible. Obviously she didn't want to turn down money which was wrong of her. Just curious how much did she charge you for these alterations?

I would go with the db dress mna posted. You don't have time to mess around with Chinese sites.

If you are going to file a small claims case against her -- and you should -- return the $100. If she gave you a check, don't cash it. To do so could be interpreted as your acceptance of a settlement. Then, tell her you'll see her in court.

And Rachel, I know you're trying to be helpful (which is very sweet), but some of the Asian knock-off sites are not reliable gown sources. You have had good luck, but plenty of brides have been devastated by what is delivered to their door. This isn't time for her to take this kind of chance.

And OP, I have to ask, did she seriously just come at you with a pair of scissors and start cutting? It doesn't sound like you had hired her, at that point; it sounds like you have were having a consult (you know, you put on the dress, she examines it, and figures out if she can do it, how long it will take, and what it will cost. Then, and only then, could you have made an informed decision as to how you were going to proceed).

BTW, I'm with everyone else. There is no way I'd wear that dress.

I'm so sorry. I would demand that the seamstress give you your money back and try to get another dress of the rack and go to someone else

    1. Go find a dress. I would try BHLDN, David's again, and then second hand shops. Also, if you go to David's, tell them what happened. I've found they're super sympathetic (e.g. letting me exchange a dress months after I purchased it, and it was sitting in my house. And then buying an off the rack dress on clearance, one month later seeing a tear, and then ordering me a brand new one).

    2. Email the woman and try and get her to explain in writing that she didn't have the proper machine for the dress.

    3. Go to small claims court, and demand repayment of the alterations, plus the dress damage, plus any fees you accrued when you had to get one last minute. Your main argument is that she should not have agreed to do the alterations without telling you beforehand that she lacked the proper equipment.

EDIT: I suggest telling David's what happened because they might be able to rush you a dress without charging you, might give you a discount, etc.

Oh my goodness. It literally looks like she just took kitchen scissors to it.

Like everyone else has said, she needs to make this right, even if that means buying you a new dress. Then find a new seamstress ASAP.

Was she drunk?! My 8 year old daughter could've done better than that...and she's not the best with scissors. I agree with PPs...take care of your dress needs ASAP. I suggest letting her know you will be obtaining a lawyer and possibly suing her, so it'd be in her best interest to take her head out of her ass and reimburse you/realize being a seamstress probably isn't the best gig for her. That is complete and utter BS. I would be so rageful right now. You are being so much more diplomatic than I could. Kudos to you and I hope it all pans out!
