Pierced ear help!

Jessy, on April 2, 2010 at 10:51 AM Posted in Planning 0 20

I got my ears pierced more than ten years ago. In the past three years, I really haven't been wearing earrings. A friend made a matching necklace and earring set that I want to wear to my wedding. Here's the issue:

I can get the earrings in, with minor difficulty... depending on the day. By the end of the day, my ears are irritated... like they are going to get infected. If I take earrings out, I can't get any in for a few days after.

I can't find any studs, or I would just pop those in and leave them for a good long time. Might just go out and buy some. But the other thing is that I'm looking for ways to cut down on infection. I grew up using alcohol and peroxide, but was reading that they slow down healing. I'm a slow healer as it is. I can't use any antibiotic creams that contain neomycin... I'm very allergic to it. Any suggestions?

Find your closest Claire's Jewerly store and one that will pierce your ears. The have an Antistpict liquid that they give you when you first do your ears. See if they will sale you some.

I would try sterlizing the earrings before wearing them. Also you might want to try to find some good studs to wear. I wear earrings all the time and sometimes it's the metal that ends up irrating my ears.

Mine do the same thing. I haven't worn earring in years. I have found that wearing the thinner wire earrings give my holes more air, I guess, so they are less irritating than my studs. Even my diamonds hurt my holes. You might just want to wear them for your day only, or keep trying to wear them every other day.

My daughter and myself both have sensitive ears and i found the cheapest place to get (piercing = hypoallergenic) studs is Sallys Beautty Supply, I dont like the back of the earring gouging behind my ear so I get the hoops. They also sell the piercing solution that is supposed to be used w/ a new piercing and a great "all-purpose" cleaner. Also your earring needs to be rotated daily to help healing along. Peroxide/alcohol both have adverse effects on your healing b/c they scab and shrink the hole, which is not what you want. studs are usually about $5-10 and solution is about $7.

The only down side to the piercing studs is they are a larger diameter and will take a bit of patience to get them through your holes and will most likely be sore from this afterwards.

Do you know what you are allergic to? If it's a metal allergy it is more than likely a nickle sensitivity. That means you should only wear real gold or stering silver jewelry for the time being. In the mean time I would take an OTC allergy med like Zyrtec or Benadryl for a couple of days to lessen the sensitivity. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before touching your ears. Keep your earrings clean!!. Clean them with alcohol between uses.. Let them air dry before you put them in. OOPS you should buy at least 2 pairs so you can change them out.

Make sure when you buy studs they are either hypoallergenic or more than 14K gold. Leave them in for as long as you can. Your ears will eventually accept new earings less painfully.

I have extremely sensitive ears, I even had issues with Claire's sensitive earrings (Nickle free). I've tried almost everything and still haven't found a solution. The only earring that didn't bother me as much were the ones my ears were pierced with. Not sure what they were made out of, I think they were gold (although my white gold diamond earrings have me in pain within 5-6 hours). There's one idea that might work for you. Might want to buy a cheap pair to experiment. I heard that if you paint the earring with clear nail polish, it shouldn't give you problems. Worst case, just put the earrings on the day of the wedding and take them out after pictures or at the reception.

Thanks, ladies. I'm really good about only wearing cleaned earrings, washing my hands, and not playing with my ears. Maybe I'm sensitive to the metal. I have no idea what the earrings are made of.

I'll take a trip to the mall and buy a few pairs of studs and check out the cleansing solution and see how that works.

I dont think they are infected. It is most likely the holes are stretching back out. When ever I have stretched my holes they are sore for a very long time. It took 2 months for the swelling to go down in my cartilage after it was pierced. I would definately get some studs to get your ears use to earrings again. One thing that I have found to help and we did as kids. Put some sting through the hole. You can either make a string hoop and wear them or I just take a dull sewing needle and pull the string through. I knot the end and the small knot cleans out any gunk that collected in the hole.

Try putting clear nail polish on the post.

Jewelers will have a coating they can put on the posts that is a lot safer to use than clear nail polish. My ears are double pierced, and my 2nd holes are VERY sensitive and start itching and getting all red after a few hours. Nail polish is a quick fix, but in the long run please have a pro take care of it Smiley smile

I think piercing studs are titanium, but I could be wrong.

If you go into a tattoo shop that does piercing, they have a product called H2Ocean and it's amazing. It doesn't sting, is in a spray for easy application, and will help healing and won't dry it out. All of the ingredients are natural. But I agree with getting some posts that are a good metal and leaving them in.

I know when I had my belly button pierced they suggested salt water... (actually the stuff wow junkie suggested is what i used!)

on another note are you allergic to any types of metal? that might be part of the problem. My ears do the same thing to an extent... they hurt but dont get infected I find that heaver cheaper ear rings do it more

I'm not aware of any metal allergies, but it is entirely possible. The last time I wore earrings for a day, they were red, swollen, and bleeding slightly by the end of it... and incredibly itchy.

How do you find out about metal allergies? Is that part of a standard allergy panel at an allergists? Or do you just figure it out by experience?

Does the part of your jeans where the button touches your skin get itchy and sore? Thats always a good indication of it. Does wearing a cheap watch cause the same problem? My cousin has a metal allergy and those are her biggest complaints.

I believe you just find out by trial and error. Try a pair of gold (yellow tend to have fewer allergies), titanium, silver, or surgical steel. Those tend to have the fewest allergies.

I have seen jewelry for "sensitive" ears and Nickel-free earrings. Get those! Smiley smile I've seen them at Kohl's, Walmart, and Claire's.

While I love Wally World, I have gotten the sensitive earrings there, and I still reacted to them. What I've noticed is that the coating on almost all of my posts is gone, and especially with places like WalMart, they're going to use a cheaper metal as the "base" that you can still react to, and then put the "sensitive" coating on top. I get itchy with certain necklaces around the clasp area if it starts itching or rubbing at my neck. An allergist or even your GP should be able to help you out. Wound Wash is awesome. I got if for when I had my nose pierced, pretty handy Smiley smile

For cleaning products, I've had the best luck with using freshly made salt water. Its like a salt water gargle, but pour it on your ears. I have used Claire's ear care stuff, and not had much luck [slow, painful healing.] But I switched to making the salt water when I realized its used for both sinus & throat rinses to clear out bacteria and its worked great for me since.
