Photo release permission for wedding reception venue?

Ying, on April 14, 2014 at 11:46 AM Posted in Planning 0 4

Hi everyone! We are about to contract with our wedding reception venue, but on the contract they want us to give them permission to use our wedding photos. I get it if the photographers ask for photo release permission or copy right, but is it normal that the reception venue also requests the photo permission? If we say yes, how about the guests in the photos? Do we have to get photo release permission from everyone attending our wedding? Maybe I am overreacting, but I'd appreciate your experience and thoughts on this topic. Thanks!

Every photographer we looked into had this clause in their contract. Basically the photographer has the right to use their art (photos of you) in their advertising. I am shaky on doing boudoir photos because of this because I would die if one of my clients saw them accidentally on the photogs website.

I don't have that clause in my venue contract but I do have it in my DJ contract. It makes sense as each vendor wants to have photos for their website. Honestly, if I was a guest at an event with a photographer, I would assume that it is possible that those pictures would show up on line or in a vendor's advertising. We live in an age where your image really isn't your own anymore (stores have pictures/videos of everyone that walks, things like that). There really isn't a guarantee that your image is ever protected from being published (or re-published) on a day to day basis.

The venue will possibly just be interested in pics of the two of you in different areas of the venue (outside or inside).

You can always ask them to take out that clause. Some of my couples have asked that I not use their photos in my advertising (I'm an officiant, not a photog).

You can't really give them permission to use your professional wedding photos-- your photographer has to, and most won't.

Do they want to take photos of you themselves?
