Outdoor ceremony brides, what are you providing for guest comfort?

Patricia, on November 5, 2010 at 5:59 PM Posted in Planning 0 38

I'm having my wedding in a garden late June. Ceremony will be about 1/2 hr.

For you brides also having outdoor ceremonies, what are you providing for your guests' comfort? I'm thinking of using:

1.chairs (enough for all guests)- was at a wedding once with only enough for 1/3 guests

2.galvanized steel tub filled w/ice and mini bottles of water

3.herbal bug repellant (hopefully bugs won't be a problem, but if so I already bought this nice smelling spray & tested it camping) placed in a galv steel tub

http://www.rei.com/product/751171

4. fans??? parasols??? the priest suggested hats to provide shade, not sure if I'm crazy about that idea- might mess up the photo asthetics.

What are you using? Any input? Thanks!

My wedding will be outside in a garden too, but in Vegas we don't really have bug problems (too hot I guess) so I'm not worried about bug spray. I thought about the water idea but we're having our wedding in the morning so I nixed that, there really isn't anything I am providing other than seating. The ceremony is only going to be 20 min or so, I think anything I could provide would have been unnecessary

I am also having an outside ceremony. We thought about the hats and parasols but I think they will be distracting in pictures. I had found a website a while ago that enables you to put your program on a hand held fan.We were thinking about that, but we nixed the program idea. Also tossed around the idea of handheld battery operated fans but they add up. We are already doing 1,2, and 3. We cant think of anything else for them. Dont know if that helps but its some feedback.

As a Wedding Officiant that performs hundreds of outdoor weddings every summer, I can tell you that the worst problem I have noticed is bugs in the early fall and scorching heat in the summer. Cute little fans are cheap and can be purchased at Michaels Crafts or you can make them using your programs. That is a cute idea that I have seen. Don't use metal chairs, use white plastic as they do not get hot, and make sure you and the officiant have a gazabo so that the sun does not make your eyes water causing make up to run yuck. LOL and it is hard for the officiant to read if the sun is too direct. Umbrellas are bad, they block the view for others. Good Luck! Congratulations!

I'm having an outdoor ceremony in August. We are having water, chairs, and our programs on the stick so that it's like a fan. Haven't thought much further than that though.

I am doing an outside ceremony, but only providing chairs. It is in late afternoon on the lawn of a historic mansion with trees all around for shade. And with our weather I am not worried about it getting too hot.

We are having an outdoor wedding the end of July and the summers here in Iowa get very hot. Our wedding is a late afternoon wedding and the spot where we are getting married is well shaded, but we are still providing chairs, handheld fans, and bottled water. It will be a short ceremony so I don't think anything else is necessary.

It's NY: I recommend a rain venue. Other than that, the weather can vary quite a bit, could be lovely, could be hot & humid. Maybe with the bugspray a bottle of sunblock, some people burn easily. Just make sure it's clear that it's an outdoor venue and people should remember to bring their own sunglasses. My friend did an outdoor ceremony and the whole bridal party had sunglasses on (her regular glasses are transitions lenses).

I'm having an outdoor ceremony at the beginning of october in pennsylvania. so it might be a bit chilly, or it might be hot. who knows. we are having a short ceremony (probably 15 minutes) so we wont be doing anything. i dont think much can happen in that time span that would be so unpleasant that i should add another 100 to the budget

Always remember about half of the people you send out invites do will come to your wedding, so 120 invites equals 60 chairs.

As far as fans and bugs humm. depends on time of year and where at. Up in Pinetop AZ during the summer you don't need anything... plus its not 120 deg. out.. a cool 85 Smiley smile

We are having a beach wedding. Fabric covers and straw hand held fans on each chair, bottled water and rum punch on ice plus we scheduled it earlier to avoid mid day heat and crowds. We will also encourage everyone to take off their shoes and we will have paint brushes for people to brush the sand off their feet after.

We had our wedding outside in a garden at the end of July. We had bins of ice with water bottles in them for our guests but they didn't need much more than that. Our chairs were placed under an awning so they were blocked from the sun.

Our ceremony was outside in August, which is typically warmer, but the weather wasn't bad. Our ceremony was super short, like 20-25 mins. So all we did is gave them seats. I know that bug spray, water, fans, etc are all nice to give, but honestly. Kind of pointless of they're going to be there for 45 mins and then leave. We didn't have a recieving line or anything, Most of our guests arrived 15-20 min before the ceremony (some even armed with booze, wasn't impressed on that) and I didn't hear any complaints/problems/etc.

I'm a wedding planner in NY and I always believe that you need to have a "Plan B".

What if it rains? Always plan for the worst, but expect the best. We like to set up a "welcome bar" for our guests as they arrive to the ceremony... sparkling water, champagne, maybe a bit of fruit. The ceremony probably won't last more than 1/2 hour normally. Depending on where it is held outdoors should decide on whether you will need bug spray. Generally, only late afternoon and evening weddings need bug spray, and only if it's on grass in an area that has water close to it. Late June is usually not that humid. I would suggest the programs made into fans, but I wouldn't go any further than that. Enjoy your day!

We are having our ceremony outside but aren't really doing anything special. We will of course have enough chairs for everyone and we are going to have a tent up. Our ceremony will only be about 15-20 minutes and September around here is really mild weather wise, so we aren't to worried otherwise.

We are having an outdoor wedding in mid September so I am not too worried about the heat.
