OUR HOTEL JUST CANCELED OUR CEREMONY/RECEPTION CONTRACT WITH 6 MONTHS TILL THE WEDDING!!!!!!

FutureMrs2011, on October 18, 2010 at 9:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 41

Ok, so I get a call from the venue today (a hotel) and they tell me that they will be doing renovations on the hotel during the time frame that my wedding would have occured! WTH? I don't know what to do! We cannot push the date back! I have already sent out the STD's and I have already ordered the invitations! The only "good" thing was that they did contact other hotels in the area to see if they could accomodate us...but that is still not enough! I don't wanna cry over spilled milk but I am freaking out over here!!!! :-(

So sorry this happened. I can't even imagine! I would ask if the whole place is closed or just that room. Do they have another space you could use? Otherwise, all you can do is take them up on the offer to help you look. Good luck!

OHh i'm so sorry that happened Brandi! many people have planned a wedding in 6 months or less, although I realize this realization does not soften the blow ..are you in an area that tends to book up really early?? How long ago did you make the reservations? I'd check to see if the hotel will incur any of the costs to you, esp like if you have to re-order the invites.. Good luck!!

Ensure you get back a full refund of whatever you may have already paid, then start looking at other options. I think you should be able to, where do you live?

I truly hope you find somewhere else. I'm so sorry.

I would ask them to refund you the money for your invitations. Either way you arent going to be able to use them. What time of year is your wedding? Maybe they could set something up outside for you?? I am sure you will figure something out Brandi!

I would definitely ask them to refund money for the invites, a full, refund, and if a similar reception costs more, they would be responsible for the difference (a similar reception, not a million dollar reception in its place). Focus on what you can do, not on what is going wrong!

They did contact another hotel in the area (Hilton) and they are going to hold our date in case we want to move our wedding there so that is one good thing. All of the ballrooms will be closed for renovations so we can either wait until the renovations are complete or move it. I have already ordered the invitations so I am going to ask they reimburse us for that. I think I was so in shock at the meeting that I didn't even get a chance to say anything!

Our wedding is April 2011 so I am hoping that someone has a space available because we are not changing the date! And we are getting our full deposit back, that was one thing they did say at the meeting. I am trying to stay positive, hopefully the Hilton is better than the Marriott.

Well, is there anything in the contract about them canceling? How long ago did you book it? I find it rather absurd that they couldn't possibly know they would be doing renovations, it is not something you decide to do and plan in one night. They should have not taken any contracts for a period.

I believe they are giving you time to find another venue, but they should cover whatever the difference since it is them canceling on you and you will have to incur other costs due to their inability to carry out the contract... IDK, I would be upset too!

We booked with them in June, I got engaged in May. They shouldn't have taken any contracts if they were unsure, I totally agree! Fortunately, I have a wonderful wedding coordinator and she is looking for other venues for us. We are also going to check out the Hilton that they referred to us. I am just trying to keep a positive attitude!

    I'm so sorry, that's terrible!

Something else to check: Make sure you look at your other vendor's contracts. Sometimes there is a clause about change of any details that could result in fees - if that is the case, I would approach the venue about those fees, too.

If you have any flexibility in your budget, i'd get with a planner immediately! They have the connections and know how to get everything worked out in a short amount of time. They can probably build an affordable package around your needs. If not, don't spend time on what just happened. Get to work on your new venue. May be a blessing in disguise.
