Ordered the invites...now an unexpected need to change the date :(

Shannon, on January 20, 2012 at 11:02 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

We thought we had everything worked out with no conflicts, but last night my son found out that he has a final on May 5th at 4:30 (exact time and day we were planning to get married) He asked the professor if he could take the final early and the prof said he couldn't. I guess when you are in a class of 300 it is hard to individualize a final. Anyway I ordered the invites with May 5th, we changed the date to May 12th. Its too late they are already in production so I can't change them. Should I cut my losses and order new ones, or does anyone have any other suggestions?

I think at this point you'll probably just have to take the hit and order new ones... sorry Smiley sad

Depending on the design of the invitations, it might be possible to put a nice sticker label over the date to change it. It doesn't seem worth ordering completely new ones to change the 5 to a 12!

I was thinking about printing new dates on lables and cutting them to fit on my STDs (we changed ours a whole year) but that might turn out horrible

I am guessing he is a college student? He could always talk to his teacher and see if they will let him take it early

Since they are ordered and you have to take them try the label thing. Take one to your local office supply place and ask them to match the color of your paper and see how that works. One label can probably hold about ten 12s

Thanks ladies....I think I might try the label thing. Everything is the same on the invite except changing the 5 to a 12. I am thankful the venue and caterer are able to accomodate.

@Heather - he is a college student and he talked to his prof. and its a no go.

I am really OK with the change, May 5th was not exceptionally special and it is kind of cool that we are changing from 5/5/12 to 5/12/12

Personally, I think he should try harder with his professor. I just graduated from college and I've never had a professor be so blatantly unaccomodating! Did you send out Save the Dates? If so...there are most likely guests that have already made travel plans, taken off work, etc. Changing the date isn't as easy as you might think...

Are there other sections of the course? If so, he could take it earlier with one of those sections. If he is telling the professor this far in advance, he has to be able to make arrangements.

    Stickers or an insert?

Depends how fancy the invites are. Do you feel a sticker would ruin the elegance of the invite? If you do the insert route, you could always do free business cards and a little double sided tape and stick it right on top of the invite so they need to read it.

    ******* DATE CHANGE *********

    Please mark your calendars.

The date is actually May 12.

Thanks Hayley! My invitations are by no means elegant or top notch. It wasn't one of the things I wanted to spend a lot on.

@Katie Bug...I agree with the try harder with the prof. but you would have to know my son. Not that my wedding isn't important to him but his education is and always has been SO important that he didn't feel he should push the issue, the prof. is very new and he thought if it was a more seasoned prof. they would of worked with him. Also I did not send out STD's so I think we will be OK.

Lot's of schools do finals on Saturdays if they don't have enough slots during the week...mine didn't, but Clemson is only mid-sized.

@Shannon - I completely understand about being serious about your education and not wanting to start off on the wrong foot with a new professor! If you didn't send out Save the Dates, then it will probably be OK!

@Julie...that is what I thought when he first went off to college a few years ago...He goes to University of Colorado and he has had finals every semester for 3 years on a Saturday. It is usually the Saturday the beginning of finals week...I don't get it either!

I wanted to add that we knew it was a possibility that he would have a final on the 5th, but since it is his 3rd year and he was aware of the wedding WAY in advance we thought the prof would be understanding also we thought it would be in the am and he would have plenty of time to make it home, but I guess this is what happens when you assume
