Alyse, on April 27, 2010 at 9:25 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

My FH has shingles...oh joy!! He has been on meds for a few days now but at the end of every day his head hurts so bad, he lays in bed at 6 and sleeps because he cant get up it hurts so much. He is taking Valtrex for it, does anyone know if this could be from the med. I told him to call the doc. but why would he do that! grr i am tired of him being in so much pain!

I had shingles in my eye twice, is it in his eye or stomach area? I was in a lot of pain and slept about a week straight. My guess is it's the virus that is causing the pain.

It really did a number on me and my vision in that eye is shot now. The eye doctor said their is a scar and it's like looking out of a wet window.

Oh it hurt like an SOB. He will be back to normal before too long, it's been a few years but if I remember correctly it lasts a little over a week and he should start coming around.

Unfortunately shingles are painful. Just have him take some over the counter pain meds such as ibuprofin or tylenol. Shingles (like Chickenpox) just need to run it course.

My cousin has had shingles twice and was out of commission for weeks on end........ but then again he also had a kidney transplant awhile back, so his immune system isn't as great as the average person.

Awww I'm so sorry he's going through this. One of my former co-workers was out for weeks and his head was soooo swollen. I'm sure you'll take good care of him, though Smiley smile

I had this, last Sept. It hurts and I am happy that I went to my Dr. within 24 hrs of the first signs of it.....which was a rash that looked like eight spider bites.

My Dr. gave me anti-virals to stop the spread. It still hurt for about 4 days...but not as much as it could have, if I would have waited to go in to see her. You can't get the vaccination until you are over 60. Well, not moi.

    Best wishes to your FH.

There should be some literature he received with the prescription with a list of side effects.

Headache is a pretty common side effect of Valtrex. I used to work for a dermatologist and we saw it more often then most people think. Shingles real name is Herpes Zoster. It is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus. It typically only effects young children/baby's who's immune systems are not built up, elderly people who's immune systems aren't as strong as they one were or people who are under severe stress. Your FH should stay away from anyone who is immue comprimised and either see the doctor for a a change in medication or stick it out but do NOT cut the course of the medication short. Shingles can be very painful and can result in long term nerve damage (pain) forever if untreated however if he takes his medicaiton and it was detected within a decent amount of time he should be fine. It will be uncomfortable while it runs its course but it will clear up. If it worsens he should seek a physican ASAP
