NWR - effects from going off bc pill

Asian~Wife, on October 13, 2010 at 8:37 AM Posted in Planning 0 24

While we're not actively TTC yet (much to my mom and MIL's dismay!), I am going to quit taking the pill and hopefully get my body back on its natural track. I took my last active pill over the weekend, and expect to start my cycle this week and then will not start a new pack on Sunday. I've read several articles that say the effects of coming off it can be pretty brutal. :/ Acne breakouts (which is awful because I've already started having issues with this probably 5 months ago now), weight gain (which is also awful because I gained back ALL the weight I lost prior to the wedding on the honeymoon), mood swings.

For those of you who have gone off the pill, what happened to you? My pill was Trinessa (generic for Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo) if that means anything.

I haven't gone off of it, so I'm not sure, but good luck! The weight gain surprises me since most people gain when they go on. I know you're not actively TTC, but are you open to it happening? My gyno said it often happens soon after going off the pill since your body naturally wants to conceive and you haven't been letting it.

The last thing I need right now is a bunch of weight gain before gorging myself over the holidays! LOL Smiley smile Yeah, we're both open to it happening but we want to wait until early next year to seriously try. We are going to use other methods of bc until then, but I realized I've been on the pill for 12 years and it kinda scared me that I'd been on it for so long and I'm sure my body is going to need to adjust.

I feel you there! I've been on for 10 years, and I really want to go off the hormones! But we're not ready for babies yet, and condoms suck, so I guess we'll have to stick it out a little while longer.

Havent gone off of it but keep in mind most couples get knocked up right after quitting the pill... you become like fertile mertile!

People may notice that they got knocked up right after they go off BC because it's an interesting narrative, but there are plenty of people who don't. It doesn't make you any MORE fertile than you were before (if you had irregular periods/ovulation before being on BC, you will probably still have them when you come off). It just makes you AS fertile as you were before, which if you're in your early 20s is "pretty fertile," so if you do want to avoid pregnancy for awhile, condoms are a good idea.

It is important to recognize that the Pill does not remain in your system, no matter how long you've been on it--12 weeks or 12 years. You can get pregnant if you miss a single BC pill! It's not like Depo, which does linger in the system for a few months.

Finally, if you're planning to try next year, I'd go ahead and start taking folic acid NOW. It really only protects against birth defects if you've been taking it BEFORE conception.

I went off the pill once for a couple of months, and I actually lost the weight I had gained while on the pill. You never know, you might loose some weight that you might have gained while on the pill.

Absolutely nothing happened to me, no side effects whatsoever. And the best part was that my period came just when it should, which is what I was most worried about. But my cycle was perfectly normal for months after stopping the pill, until I got pregnant :o) I had been on the pill for 10 years or so. And my OB actually told me you can be MORE fertile right after you stop the pill because your body is all excited it can finally get pregnant like it is meant to do.

No side effects for me when I got off the pill way back when I got preggers with my son. I felt so much better being off it bc I had all those side effects while on was on the pill.

Never had any side effects, except that I lost a bunch of weight that I "found" while on the pill.

@Analy- I'm glad I wasn't the only one who lost the weight. I'm hoping that happens to me again, too bad I'm not getting off the pill until after the wedding! So I gotta loose the weight the hard way! lol

I stopped taking the pill 7 months ago. The first cycle off was longer then average (35 days), but my cycles before the pill were always longer than most. The biggest problem for me has been the Acne, grrrrr.... I didn't have it in highschool but I sure have it bad now... it has started to calm down, but I have to keep up a routine of doing a clay mask every 3 days or it flares up again.

FH and I were thinking we'd conceive right away but it hasn't happened so far and now we have to stop trying so I'm not noticably preggers at my wedding...

And I agree with whoever said that you can be very fertile right after stopping the pill. My dr told me some women get on the pill for like two months to be more fertile when they stop. Interesting stuff!

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm also worried about my migraines - I get them frequently enough and I always get the menstrual migraine. I don't expect that to go away necessarily, but I don't want them to get even worse. :/ However, it sounds like a lot of you were completely fine and I'll just have to be careful about not getting prego. I'm wondering about my cycle getting back to regular. To be honest, I don't recall what my "normal" one was because it's been 12 years. I don't think it was anything crazy, but I do remember it lasting for 10 days sometimes. Maybe it was just because I was young/puberty/etc? I guess I'll find out. :0

Someone mentioned folic acid - I'm taking a daily multivitamin (I have low Vitamin D levels) so that should be covered in the daily. Do I need to take an additional supplement?

My doc claims that you "go right back to your regular cycle". BS!!!

    After going off, I:

    - gained little weight

    - irritable

    - severe pain with period.... along with going goofy amt of time in between. I'd go from 14 days to 85 days in between times.

Yeah, it was a killer. I'd even taken a pregnancy test just to make sure. I went like that for almost 2 years before going back on to control the pain and bleeding.

I told doc that my cycles were NEVER that goofy before.

Ive been on the pill for 10 yrs now...that is something ive been worrying about! My FH and I want a baby sooo so so bad! We are hoping to get married this May...and we are going to start trying that night! I didnt know you had or could have side effects from going off. My cycle is crazy now...i only have my period for about 1 day and its so light! I worry that it will take forever for my body to adjust and get pregnant. But, everyone is different and I hope I dont have any problems. I go to the doctor in next month and Im going to talk to her about getting off the pill / how long i need to be off before we try...and just everything i need to do before trying to get pregnant and while im trying to get pregnantSmiley smile
