Nontraditional dessert ideas?

Kate, on May 24, 2022 at 9:47 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
Hello all! I would love some last minute advice and inspiration! My fiance’s aunt (who is a baker) was supposed to make cheesecakes for our wedding dessert (one for each table in a self-serve style with three sauces). My fiance doesn’t like cake, so we’ve been trying to think of creative options because our wedding is just over a month away. I was thinking of asking our closest family members to make a couple desserts, maybe that will be favorites of our family members who have passed (both sets of our grandparents and both of my parents have recently passed away.) But I also don’t want an option that will stress me out with serving day of. Anyone have advice? What about serving practicalities of a dessert table (how long can things be out? When are items actually set out yo be displayed that have to be refrigerated?)

Edit: My fiance’s aunt recently became ill and can’t make the cheesecakes now. Hence our need for a new option!

The least stressful approach would be to have a dessert table catered by a third party that can make all the desserts and store and serve them appropriately.

Regarding how long things can be out should you have family make dessert for you, it will really depend on things such as what the actual items are, how they are served and the weather. For example, I make lemon meringue tart and it cannot be finished nor served too far ahead of time in summer because the meringue will weep, whereas in winter this is less of a problem. By comparison, a cake covered in ganache with all dairy pre-boiled can sit out of a fridge overnight providing it isn't too hot.

Rule of thumb is anything refrigerated can't be out for more than 2 hours before it is unsafe to eat (but like pp said, it varies and you could look more into specifics if you needed to)

Double check with your venue if you could have guests bring food, often venues don't allow individuals to bring food items because of liability issues.
As far as other ideas, donuts and cookies are budget friendly (both of these could be displayed at the tables like you had originally planned) Other fun ones would be a churro, ice cream, or crepe cart!

We had a variety of donuts and pies and the coordinator put them out just before time for dessert. However, they weren't refrigerated/didn't need to be refrigerated, so if we had wanted to, we could have displayed them on the table.

I agree with JA, you should definitely check with your venue about guests bringing food because of liability issues.

We are doing a chocolate covered strawberry tower and I have also seen a donut tower!

    Hope this helps!

I'd echo mrswinteriscoming that the easiest choice would be to hire a caterer or local bakery to make a few desserts as they'd be able to discern what would be able to be left out and what steps would have to be taken with anything else to keep them fresh.

I'd avoid anything that would need to be refrigerated since those kinds of desserts would probably need to be taken over early to be kept at the reception location, couldn't be displayed very long, etc. Cookies, doughnuts, a lot of pastries, brownies, and cake pops are all pretty easy to make/ order in bulk and display.

Hi! I think a easy a creative dessert can be
brigadeiros! Think a them as a fudgey truffle from Brazil. They are pretty easy to make and keep well after spending overnight in the freezer Smiley smile hope this helps!Nontraditional dessert ideas? 1

Can your caterer do a dessert table? Cookies, brownies, and fresh fruit are some options I'm going with.

My sister-in-law and her (sadly, now soon-to-be-ex) husband were in a similar situation. Neither of them was big cake fans, plus it was my SIL's third marriage, so they instead had a tower of mini cannolis. I'm not even a big fan of cannoli in general, but these were great! I'm not sure of your own thoughts on cannoli, but it's an option. I had another friend who he and his husband had a donut tower.

Instead of cake, my fiance and I are serving tiramisu! Other non-traditional dessert options are ice cream (though that may be difficult to serve to a large group), brownies, strawberry shortcake, fudge, or a dessert bar with assorted options. I've also seen dessert/smores pizzas, where chocolate sauce is spread across bread dough and topped with marshmallows and graham cracker crumbs.

Does your venue allow homemade food? Many do not unless you are marrying in your backyard or a local parks department venue, for food safety and liability. The easiest thing is find a vendor who specializes in the type of dessert you want and ask about their catering options.

If we were not serving cake, we would go with a crepes caterer or a local cinnamon roll baker.

We had a local ice cream shop come and serve ice cream from a cart. They arrived for “cake cutting” time and when I announced we had ice cream you never saw old people move so fast. And when our guests were done, we let the hotel staff have the rest so the shop wouldn’t have to take leftover. No set up or clean up required.

Try pies, cobblers, or something from where your families are from. I have had friends do ice cream, doughnuts, and even funnel cake.

Sorry to hear about your fiancé's aunt, hope she is on the mend. As for dessert there are so many options, you can still do cheesecakes, Costco makes delicious ones pretty big too. A cookie or donut bar is fun or how about an ice cream truck? Good luck to you!

Mini pies are a cute idea ! We have having a 3 tier spice cake which is SO GOOD OMG made by a baker close to our venue and then to save a little money we will have some brownies and chocolate chip cookies ( from BJ’s) Our venue doesn’t have a problem with us bringing in these deserts which I’m happy about 🤗 Also if you haven’t tried cookies or brownies from there you NEED to ! 😋
