Non choreographed first dance?

Mrs. Eleni T., on January 6, 2011 at 5:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

It seems more and more common for the couple to choreograph their first dance. Any of you ladies NOT choreographing? I used to dance, so choreography is second nature to me...FH not so much, so it seems strange and awkward for us to do something like that.

We are not. I still have no idea what our first dance song will be! I love to dance, but I know FH would never go for it!

I don't think we will, i guess it depends on the song..but it was bad enough for FH to do E-pics LOL. I don't think he'll go for the idea of dance lessons, haha! But hey one never knows..if you guys both want to I dont' think it would seem odd!

Also I have no idea how much something like that would cost..guess it depends on the package, but I don't think we'd fit that into our budget either.

We didn't. *I* think, JMO, choreographed dances are super duper cheesy.

We're dancing to Can You Feel the Love Tonight by Elton John (corny, I know, but it's definitely "our song"). I think we're leaning towards just going with the flow and enjoying the closeness after just tying the knot. Smiley smile

Perhaps I am old fashioned, but I would like our first dance to be a spontaneous reflection of our love for one another, as demonstrated by dancing to "our song." Fortunately for me, the FH used to be on American Bandstand and can dance me under the table.

I sometimes have the feeling that in many cases weddings have become a production or show.

DS has zero rhythm so we did take one dance class together so we would get the hang of it. We did practice a lot in our living room but nothing was "choreographed" we just kind of did what we felt and it really went well. DH's only goal was not to do the HS sway and we accomplished that.

@Analy I honestly agree. My cousin made a big deal about having their first dance choreographed and the song they had to pick was instrumental with no meaning for either of them....what was the point of that?

We aren't doing a choreographed dance, but we are taking some dance classes. I think it would be a great "date night", wonderful exercise and it will help us look good on the dance floor. I think choreographed dances have the potential to look overly elaborate or very stiff (usually because one of the participants is nervous).

@Analy...Cheesy is probably the best word to describe choreographed dances.

I agree with @Future KH. DH and I did have a blast at our free lesson and wished would could have done more just because it was fun. (but damn they are expensive) We did "my kind of dancing to my kind of music" Ahh the late great Patrick Swayze, Dirty Dancing.

Ya I think it depends on the dance type; if it's super choreographed and you can tell, that is cheesy; if it's just different moves that were practiced and people are going with the flow within that it can be a cute (non-corny) surprise! The non cheesy might be harder to pull off tho; makes me feel better about not doing it hehe!

Nope, we didn't even technically dance. We just swayed. But I didn't care. I love the feeling of us dancing as husband and wife. It was like we were the only ones in the world. So you get that feeling when your mind is going "One step back, turn, step, step, step, turn" I doubt it. I'd rather have the feeling and moment we did.

We didn't want to look like we were at a middle school dance, so we practiced a couple of times. It wasn't really choreographed, but we decided on a couple of turns in the slow part of the song and a dip at the end. Nothing fancy or cheesy.

I'm biased since I teach people their wedding dances... but it can be really pretty or cheesy depending on the choreography. And it can be super expensive depending on where you go... anywhere from $500 to more than $1000 for the franchise studios.

However, I do love watching couples wing it, be silly and happy and in love and just have a great time.

For us, since we met dancing and we teach dance together and do performances all the time, we're just going to choreograph something ourselves to our song "At the Beginning" form Anastasia.

Ugh.....we still up in the air with dancing. We definately dont want to look like a couple of high schoolers out there, but we also dont want it too cheesy. FH wants to always dance with me and I get so embarassed.....Im not the "out in your face" sorta gal.

We won't. Aside from the fact that FH has two left feet, we didn't want to spend that moment worrying about the steps. We picked a song (Beautiful in my eyes by Joshua Kadison) that has meaning to us and are both looking forward to spending that "alone time" together on the dancefloor. We'll probably just sway to the music and that will be just fine.
