No one wants to see plus size women in wedding dresses.

What do you think about this article? They say 64% of American women are overweight and that you never see plus size models in wedding dresses. The comments are kind of ignorant, but the article makes a great point.

But, here is the difference: the market for plus-size women looking to spend $3,000 or more on a Lanvin jersey dress for the office is only a fraction of the size of plus-size women looking to spend $3,000 or more on a wedding gown. Considering that more than 64 percent of women in the U.S. are overweight, and that wedding gowns range from $300-$30,000, my argument is that it simply makes SENSE to showcase on the runway how these gowns might look on body types that will actually buy them.

I can tell you that the model in my dress on the web site is a stick figure and makes the dress look hideous. Now, me in the dress...that's another story. That dress was made for me, and I feel like a supermodel in it...a wonderful size 16 supermodel :-) Suck it, haters! :-)

Which is the reason why im having my own issues feeling like its OK to wear a wedding dress...I keep trying to talk myself out of wearing my wedding dress cause I feel like I myself dont look good at all in it..but I feel that way about everything I wear so it dont make a difference I guess..and I have to wear something so guess I'll deal with it being a wedding dress.

I do feel like it makes more sense to put plus size gowns on plus size models though just so the plus size bride can see what it may look like on her body type.

    That's an interesting article.

I have to say that while shopping for BM dresses, one of my girls that is a little on the heavy side was having trouble fitting into the BM samples. They simply didn't have any dresses larger than size 12. And she got into one, and held the top part up instead of zipping.

BUt I remember coming out of the store and wondering why the stores don't stock samples for ALL size girls - junior brides to plus size. Obviously not all BMs are size 6 figures and no body fat. Not all BMs are adults.

    I don't get it.

As one of the "overweight" brides-to-be I was thankful to see that several of the websites I visited did indeed show bridal gowns for plus figures actually on women who were plus figured!

**Anna E - you will look lovely in your wedding gown! When I went to look at dresses I told my FH that I would most likely come home depressed after seeing what I looked like in one. To my amazement, when I found the right dress I didn't see the extra weight and the double chin - I saw how beautiful the dress made me look and feel.

**Rachel - you are so right about the stores not stocking samples for all size girls. makes me wonder if there isn't a market out there for bridal shops who deal in mostly plus size but who can order the dresses in nonplus sizes as well. Hmmmm.....

There are some salons that actually do have dresses for everyone. I went to three salons and was able to try on a lot of gowns. David's, Alfred Angelo, and a local salon here all boasted having plus size gowns. I loved that it wasn't just one or two. The local salon actually had sample size 14-22 Justin Alexanders, Maggie, Mori Lee, etc. to try on.

I feel bad for women who are convinced to buy a gown by imaging what it could look like in their size.

I think it's absolutely absurd that a woman should have to pay for a gown that could potentially cost hundreds or thousands of dollars without getting to try it on and see how it will actually look on her. I will say though the comments on that article were very disturbing, i know PLENTY of plus sized gals who can pull off a strapless dress. I will say for me personally dress shopping so far has been pleasurable, I was able to try on the dress of my dreams and it actually fit and looked amazing. Actually i was able to try on almost 30 dresses, out of those 30 a good 22 of them fit and zipped. I was surprised. I think the article is amazing, it touches on some incredibly valid points and I hope that the wedding industry will take notice and actually work with people that aren't "model type" figures.

I know now that my wedding is over, I looked & felt hideous in my dress ... It was not.a plus sized gown in sample but I had to order it in plus size & if I had had been able to try it on, I would of run away far away! So I agree we need.more plus size gowns.

Plus Size rite here rite here and Yes when i went to shop for my dress I did not have a issue with that fact that they only have to kninney size. (2-12) I love me and I know i did not gain the weight by sitting and stuffing my face. my issue is hips and @$$. and i have a smalllll waist. but my point is Yes they do go overboard with the prices because it is plus size. I love my Thickness cause it is not sloppy. i got the mori lee blu 4816 and honey funny that day i went to bride of america here in miami there was this lady a size 6 trying on the dress and the I tried on the dress . Do you know when i walked out the Lady cryied and she said omg you look wonderful. And I told the guy you would get more business if you would have some sample dress in plus size. cause when you go and see something you like who wants to hear o we don't have it in your size???? then you have to go by a guess on what it looks like on you. I say to all my plus size Girls. Embrace you.

The whole dress industry needs a good kick in the head. First of all, WHY should a size 14 woman be a size 18 in a gown? I never, every understood this logic. I know it's only a number, but still, why can't we be the same size in everything?

NEXT: these shops should get on board with the idea that 'average' size women (and in the US, 14 is an average size) should be able to see models in her size, try on dresses that fit, and feel like she is as deserving of royal treatment as a size 6 woman is.

I think that dress shops who decided to cater to 'average' size women would make a killing; I've had so many gorgeous brides in all different sizes and none of you should have to be treated as if your dress is an afterthought.

That was a major player in me buying a gress. If the designer didnt have a plus size model in the dress on their website/catalog. Then I wasnt wasting my money. Even with my bridesmaid Dress's I picked one which flattered the variety of figures in my party

I think some stores are finally realizing that there is a true, good market for plus-size gowns. Some of the smaller boutiques/designers might not, which is a shame. They're potentially losing out on who knows how many thousands of $$ by women who have the budget, but need a larger size.

I personally didn't even bother looking anywhere that didn't have a plus-size line advertised. I knew if they didn't, they'd probably just make the same dress a lot bigger, and not every dress looks the same when it's made 10 sizes bigger. Stores like DB and Alfred Angelo get it. My dress is from DB, and I have a wonderful experience w/ them. They had MANY dresses, in my size, available to try on. They also had BM dresses that flatter my very skinny (& pregnant) BM all the way to my size 22 BM.

I had dinner with a bridal magazine owner a few months ago, and over dinner was told that the month they put a plus sized model on the cover, the got complaints from brides AND it was the worst month of sales of the magazine. They got ONE positive letter to the editor from a plus sized woman who thanked them for showing a model in her size. All the other comments and feedback was negative AND some of those negative comments came from women who are plus size.

So as much as I agree that women of all ages, shapes, colors and sizes should be represented in magazines....the sales of a bridal magazine dont lie...the majority of brides dont want to see plus sized models on the cover of a magazine!! It blows my mind and makes me sooo angry, but its the truth! A thruth I hope we as women can help change!

The thing that really bothered me when it came to look at dresses wasn't my experience, but that of my little flower girl. I'm used to stores not having my size or having little options (though I went through DB and I was able to try on many dresses in my size). But my 9 year old FG had to try on dresses that were too small because all the FG dresses that were in the store were for toddlers and some in a couple sizes too small for her. I felt horrible. She's young and shouldn't have to deal with that kind of thing. I tried by best to keep her from even thinking about the size of things, but THAT really bothered me.

I never did understand the concept of trying on a dress that is not necessarily in your size, then ordering the dress in a different size, and waiting months for it to come in. NotFroofy and I bought our dresses in a consignment store. Not only did we save money, but a) we got to try on the exact dresses that we would be wearing, and b) we took them home the same day.

I cried the first time i went dress shopping... I'm a size 14 I'm not the biggest girl, but I am not the size I would like to be. the dresses that they brought me (size 16) would not cover my boobs in remotely the right way, I would not leave the dressing room in any of them because of the way every dress sat on my chest. When a month later I did find a dress I liked on me they ordered the largest size the dress came in and told me that they could find extra fabric in the dress to cover my front. my dress doesn't fit even remotely, and there still isn't space enough for my chest... I am paying as much for alterations as I am for the gown. it isn't right that these things don't make sense. (P.S I'm in the military and NOT heavy in a bad way, I just ain't a little girl.)

Honestly, I've seen so many posts on here where the "real" girl actually looks so much better in the dress than the model does!
