No Bridesmaids Flowers

DNA, on January 6, 2015 at 10:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 46

Hi - for budget reasons I am looking at another way to cut a chunk out of the expenses. (Yes, we are giving the guest list another big chop). Has anyone considered or not done flowers for the bridesmaids?

I know the big question is what will they hold walking down the aisle? Any ideas of something I can throw together for free?

How bad is it if they hold nothing? (God forbid, they walk down the aisle with hands free...)

Flowers aren't important to me at all. There is a fine line between spending as little as possible and looking cheap, I don't want to look cheap.

Thanks everyone, stay warm. Chicago is freezing right now. Literally, -35 windchill.

Ooooh sweet home Chicago! I don't miss that windchill! I thought about having my girls hold little lanterns since our ceremony is outdoors at dusk, but FH vetoed it.

What about one flower? A single rose? I think that's simple and beautiful.

    Books, maybe of love poems?

I don't necessarily care about bouquets, but it was important to be that my bridesmaids have them, as I think ladies can feel awkward without them and with all eyes on them, and not know what to do with their hands.

Are you having floral centerpieces? I'm planning on having my bridesmaids carry bouquets, and then just put these into short, decorative cases as the table centerpieces. Could be a good compromise to save money, especially if you were going to get centerpieces anyway!

I agree, a single flower would be nice and very inexpensive. I have seen that done a few time with roses.

Thanks guys! Great ideas. My colors are emerald and gold and its a bit of an art deco look. I was thinking about playing around with spray painting babies breath gold for center pieces. I am getting waves of inspiration (haha funny... I am not crafty at all) about making the girls a spray painted babies breath thing... Definitely wrapping the bottom to not get spray paint on their dresses.

I am not overly formal but the colors and hints of art deco (hopefully) come off as classy.

Again, thank you for the great advice everyone!

A single long stemmed rose will do the trick, Allison. If you want to take it up a notch, tie a ribbon around them. Roses comes in every color. Everyone willll be looking at you. Don't cut corners on your own bouquet.

Yeah, I forgot to mention I am definitely going to hold a bouquet. I am planning on going to a grocery store to have them make it though. I don't want to spend more than about $50 on it. Centerpiece - would you recommend still calling florists to work on a single bouquet for $50? Is it worth their while? I always envision and white with hints of green bouquet for me.

Following- thinking about a single rose, or something more cost effective than bouquets.

Allison, I would recommend that. A simple hand tied bouquet with no fanfare on the ribbon work can be done for $50. If a new business owner has a Tax ID# that allows her to purchase true wholesale, she can do a bridal bouquet for $50 (with non-exotics or peonies) and still make a few bucks. They want your review and they want the photos for their portfolio. Take it up to $65 and you'll expand your horizons.

What about laterns or kissing balls (about $25 each). Lanterns can be purchased on Amazon fairly inexpensively.

For my sister's wedding we carried lanterns, it looked pretty but if you do that, just make sure to tell them where and how to hold it to keep it uniform.

I am not even doing flowers at all. I don't get it, honestly. Like they are pretty and everything but I don't get why they are such a big part of weddings. Like why people think they are SOOOO necessary. Not judging, to each their own though.

I do like the idea a previous poster had of doing a single rose/other type of flower. Simple, cost-effective, pretty... what's not to like?

Somehow, men manage to be attendants at weddings without carrying anything. I've never understood why women couldn't do the same. If you want them to carry something, that's fine, but if it's not in your budget or you don't want it, you really don't have to.
