Hi - for budget reasons I am looking at another way to cut a chunk out of the expenses. (Yes, we are giving the guest list another big chop). Has anyone considered or not done flowers for the bridesmaids?

I know the big question is what will they hold walking down the aisle? Any ideas of something I can throw together for free?

How bad is it if they hold nothing? (God forbid, they walk down the aisle with hands free...)

Flowers aren't important to me at all. There is a fine line between spending as little as possible and looking cheap, I don't want to look cheap.

Thanks everyone, stay warm. Chicago is freezing right now. Literally, -35 windchill.

If you can find the right lantern for your look, I think that would look nice. I don't think there's anything wrong visually with not having BMs carry anything, but just thinking as if I were a BM, I'd feel really awkward if I didn't have something to carry. I wouldn't know what to do with my hands, and a single flower wouldn't be enough to keep me occupied. If none of your BMs are ADD, you can probably get away with it though. Smiley smile

I actually had a friend get married this past weekend. It was a pretty rustic wedding. Her girls carried down wine glasses with a tealight candle in them. It was actually super pretty and unique.

We opted for paper flowers to help save on the cost.

I am doing paper flowers to save on my budget. But before that I had looked at alternatives for my bridesmaids to carry. Some things I saw that were cute were windmills! But, since you are having a fall wedding, you could have them hold mini pumpkins, maybe get the small white ones? They are $1-$2. At the grocery store in the fall. I think there is Orange, White and the Green and Yellow ones usually.

I am not sure how art deco that would be though, I think a single stem of a flower would be really pretty, Our grocery store sells the mums in the fall, and those are gorgeous! And art deco looking to me at least. You can get a bouquet of them here at kroger for ~$8 for ~6 flowers. (I kept them on my dinning room table when I had people over and was trying to make my house look "fancy")

Someone already mentioned it, but a friend of mine (who also did emerald, gold, art deco) did golden fabric clutches for her girls. It doubled as their gift, becasue she made it a little wedding day survival kit.

I agree not necessary, however If you really want flowers, Go online to Costco & look at their growers selection. It's like 150 stems for $99 that's is a LOT of flowers for $100! I hadnt used them myself but I have seen lots of brides on here do it... I like the lanterns though, but I have been searching for lanterns & it could get $$$ too.

We had our girls hold books - though the florist did cover the book and insert a "floral bookmark." But the nice thing was that each of the girls picked out and brought their own book (the florist picked them up at the hotel the night before) that they thought represented something about us or our relationship and then we kept them in our home after. It was a nice, personal keepsake. Let me see if I can find a pic...

Well to be honest I didnt read everyone else`s post but depending on your theme. You could let them walk down with clutches, candles, and etc,... Try google, they usually have all sorts of ideas listed on websites.

How about tissue paper poms? Or giant paper flowers?

I'm not into flowers so I couldn't come to terms with paying for bridesmaid bouquets so I purchased clutches. My girls love fashion so it's something they can all use again, plus I need someone to hold my lipgloss Smiley winking

A friend of mine had her bridesmaids carry candles. They were in tall candle holders so there was no wax spillage or accidental burning. It was very pretty, when they got to the front they set them on the altar and then stood with their hands folded in front of them.

I love the lanterns idea! Very pretty. And the fans idea sounds pretty too!

I found these great lanterns for super cheap and in a ton of colors on Amazon Prime today and thought I'd share.

Love the single rose idea with a ribbon. I thinK lanterns would be more expensive than a small DIY floral bouquet.

Allison, my mom DIY'ed her friends centerpieces for her August wedding. They sell bunches of flowers at Jewel. We picked them up on a Friday, put them in water when we got home and the did the vases on Saturday. The water was luke warm so roses would open We ended up doing 8 vases for $120 (they were running a 3 bunches special and we bought a white rose bunch which was a little more expensive).

Bunches direct has ones for like 30 bucks or less...or just tie one together from some costco flowers if you want flowers.

otherwise my cousin used one of those HUGE flowers from hobby lobby, joanne fabrics etc. per bridesmaids and it was beautiful. I think a book, a purse, a single Ferne, wheat grass, a ball of pine cones glued together with a ribbon to hold or it could be something based on a theme...evening event candles maybe? Or a photo of you with them in a frame...etc...

Here are a few ideas: http://www.the-louisville-wedding-blog.com/2012/10/18-alternatives-to-bridesmaids-carrying.html

I wouldn't say that I like them all, but that's a personal thing. I find carrying clutches or purses just plain strange, but again it's a personal preference.

I would put a vote out for having SOMETHING to hold.
