My grandma's pearls - Need your help!

Jass, on October 3, 2010 at 6:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

So my grandmother left me some pearls years and years ago. They are fresh water pearls, not the round shape, but rather the oblique and more irregular shape. I would really like to somehow include them in my wedding. I took some pictures of them this weekend. Take a look and let me know if you have any ideas on how I could include them. It would mean the world to me to have something of her with me on that day.

I could make a bracelet? Or use it under my bouquet? And how would I go about cleaning them?

Very pretty. Could you use them in your hair somehow?

If you don't wish to wear them, use them as a bouquet wrap or incorporate them into the bouquet.

I really like them as a bracelet, but they could also be nice as a bouquet wrap OR part of your hairstyle--do you have a general idea of what your hairstyle will be?

Thanks ladies! I love the idea of using them for the bouquet wrap, and maybe making a bracelet. The picture with the pearls as a bracelet, the flash hit them in such way that it looks a bit discolored. Hmmm.

@Cabell- I'm leaning towards either the hair down in curls, or have a side pony tail with curls.

I would do the bouquet wrap because you carry the bouquet close to your heart Smiley smile With that many, you could do a single or double strand bracelet as well.

I'd say, go for the bouquet wrap. They'll look super nice. I like the bracelet too.

Take them to a jeweler and have them restrung into a modern set that you could wear for the wedding and later. Pearls are timeless.

I never thought about that Amy, I figured I would do it myself but it's true I don't know much about making jewerly. I'll look into taking that, thanks!

Do not try to do it yourself. Good pearls are knotted that means a knot on each side of the pearl. If the string breaks the pearls do not go all over the place. My grandmother was a jeweler and she used to string pearls. It is really a unique skill. I am wearing a set of her pearls for my wedding. I love them. The more you wear them the more the luster they get.

Those pearls are beautiful. I would wrap them around your bouquet.

If u want to clean them, you need special pearl cleaning stuff. Don't drop them in your normal jewerly cleaner. You can buy a container at any jewerly store in the mall. I like the bracelet, if you think it compliments your dress style. And I like Amy's Idea of having them restrung.

Thanks everyone! I forgot to mention that this pearl necklace was made by my grandma. It used to be her hobby, and she would make them herself. This might actually be a set that she did with me as a child. Smiley smile

I'm definitely going to look into getting them restrung, as these are not knotted, at least I don't think so.

Thanks Hayley, I figured I couldn't use the same cleaning stuff I use for my e- ring. But I can get it for pearls right?

I had my gmas pearls too! :-) I had pearl earrings (2 sets) and it really matched the jewelry flow. With the halter the necklace didn't fit right so I just wound it to make a bracelt. But it did end up coming undone a bazillion times and I mainly wore it for picture sake but knew she was still there with me. If you can I'd get them professionally strung but those options you exampled are amazing! I love the bracelet one! :-) here's a picture of my lovely bracelet :-)

@Nicci- I love that you included your grandma's pearls in your wedding. It's very sentimental, and such a beautiful thing to do. Did you have to make the pearls into a bracelet or was it a bracelet before?

Thank you for posting the picture! Smiley smile

@Shauna- I'm so glad you like the idea of a hair pin and the bracelet. I love love that idea too, but I'm not sure how the not round pearls will look like on a hair pin since they have a hole in the middle. Hmmmm will have to take it to a jeweler and see what can be done.
