My dress arrived and it still fits poorly. Anyone else?

Just needing to not feel alone in this. I keep stumbling on posts about everyone getting their dresses in and gushing about how it "fits like a glove." Well, goddamnit, mine fits terribly. And I'm starting to feel discouraged about it. I guess it's my size? But the bodice is still so huge on me that...

Did anyone else have their dress arrive and feel really disappointed by how much it still didn't fit right?

Samantha, my bridal shop didn't break my measurement down like that, but I remember I had a similar discrepancy when I ordered a bridesmaid dress a few years ago. My bust was a solid 3-4 sizes smaller than my hips.

I bought mine off the rack 4 sizes too big. My seamstress worked miracles. If that dress was altered to "fit like a glove" than anything is possible. And yours looks great! I promise!

I am in the same boat! I went for my first fitting and we decided to push it out because I had lost a few pounds and was going to lose some more, so technically my first fitting is tomorrow. The sample fit pretty good and they ordered my up a size thanks to my big bazooms (as FH calls them). I knew my first appt would suck because it would be so big. And it was. I just didn't feel very good in it at all and I won't tomorrow. I'm basically waiting for the 2nd appointment when should be mostly done just needing some small tweaks.

I am happy to read everyone's experience and alterations making it better. There are some gorgeous dresses in here!

@Jersey I feel you. I picked up my dress a month or two ago. It felt like a completely different dress- in a bad way. The dress had boning too and felt like Madonna boobs and was inches too big all over. I just about cried walking out the door. I have my first alterations appt on Thursday, but I couldn't wait that long and took it to them to see what needed to be done and get an estimate. Even just doing that made me feel so much better. I was completely shocked that my boobs were too small for this dress. (I have D's, so that doesn't happen often.) After she showed me how it would look with the different alterations I have been much calmer!

    Nicole, 4 sizes?! Damn!

BecomingBailey and Caroline, update us with pictures when you come back from your alterations. I know my mind would be eased seeing transformation pictures from other brides.

I think it looks fine in the picture. As for having to take it in about 2 inches, to me that sounds about right. I made my own dress so all of it was done by me,

but I did do a little dress shopping because I considered buying one and had I bought a dress I would have been in about the same boat. I wear a plus size but due to a breast reduction all the tops were huge on me and I was told they would probably need to take it in something like 2 or 3 inches.

That idea didn't freak me out, but I stood there laughing at the irony that once upon a time the same top would have been so small on me I would have been spilling out of it. Smiley smile

I wouldn't panic. All sounds fairly normal to me.

My dress didn't Zipper at my first appointment. The seamstress had to take apart the entire dress so get it to fit me.

It's gorgeous Jen. It will be perfect when the seamstress does alterations. Don't stress!

Mine fit horribly. It pancakes my butt, the boob part is too big and the front is gaping... You're not alone. ETA: just saw the pic. I think it looks good!! But you can see things others can't and if you don't feel comfortable, you won't be. Hang in there!!

I was totally in your shoes. My first appointment I was practically in tears and couldn't figure out what could possibly be fixed to make the dress fit like the sample I remembered. My mom and sister were so confused because it looked fine to them, but it just felt off to me. My advice is to wait for your second fitting, I felt soo much better once the top had been fitted and I was able to really drill down on the few things that needed to be changed to make it perfect. You'll get there!! (And for what it's worth, I think your dress looks beautiful so far!)

I'm late to this, but I had a similar problem -- I had a low back so the dress fit around the waist, but the bust was gaping. I also had boning that made the weird pointy boob thing that you mention. It didn't look bad until after the dress was taken in, then it was just ridiculous. We removed the boning down the front of the dress (keeping the boning in the sides) and it was MUCH better and much more comfortable. I believe my seamstress also added molded cups to smooth out the boob area. It ended up looking great, or at least I thought so!!

Also, don't be afraid to ask for your dress to be really tight. I was worried about being comfortable so we didn't go super tight, and the dress loosened as the night went on. The dress started to gape a bit by the end of the night and you can see my sticky bra in a few pictures where I'm leaning over. Whoops.

Mine is huge. My boobs are big and my butt/hips are big, so the rest of the dress I just swim in. I haven't started alterations but I'm nervous as hell about it.

When I went to pick mine up i was bloated from my period and it made me feel terrible. The woman even commented on how it barely fit. I put it on yesturday and it is to big. I plan on loosing a bit more weight before January so trusting my seemstress that all will be perfect come april.

Thanks, guys. It's nice to know that I'm not alone is really hating the dress pre-alterations. It just feels weird to feel that way since I picked the dress for a reason lol

I didn't read all of the other comments, but my dress is similar to yours and I had the same issue with pointy boobs and pokey boning. I also have pretty big hips (my largest measurement that made me go a size up). My seamstress shortended the boning since my torso is pretty short. That helped a ton. She also put wider boning in some spots to make the dress lay flat.

I went in for 7 fittings... ridiculous I know. I was pretty on the fence about the dress for fittings 1-4, mainly because it wasn't form fitting and made me look chunky. But it turned out perfect and I love now!

I ordered my dress with the original pattern altered to fit me better and I still had to go through 4 fittings because it was so big (and I didn't love my dress again until after the 3rd) but it ended up fitting perfectly and it was definitely worth it in the end!
