My dress arrived and it still fits poorly. Anyone else?

Just needing to not feel alone in this. I keep stumbling on posts about everyone getting their dresses in and gushing about how it "fits like a glove." Well, goddamnit, mine fits terribly. And I'm starting to feel discouraged about it. I guess it's my size? But the bodice is still so huge on me that...

And I'm starting to feel discouraged about it. I guess it's my size? But the bodice is still so huge on me that they needed multiple clips still.

Did anyone else have their dress arrive and feel really disappointed by how much it still didn't fit right?

Mine is big. I ended up getting a 14W just to fit my chest. It's a little big in the chest but the rest is very loose. I had a good laugh when I asked the young woman who gave me my gown at David's to check what size it was before I took it home. She said, "14W, 14 Wide." I told her that "wide" only works for shoes, in clothing the "W" stands for "Women's." I got a good chuckle out of that one.

Oh the one on the right does but I see now that was the sample. Sorry I was confused, I need to go back to kindergarten and learn my left from right. Yes the one on the left looks way better!

I remember someone telling me that the boning will show if the dress doesn't fit right, so I think that'll go away after alterations. If not, you can have it removed. And hey, it's always better to have a dress that's too big vs one that won't zip!

Oh no! Are they going to be able to alter it to fit better?

My dress was to small.. i even ordered a bigger size. I look like a busted can of biscuits. They have to take the top out a bit or a will be flashing everyone. I feel like it won't just be one alteration apt either..

Emily, I just went through and read your whole thread. That makes me feel so much better! And your dress is gorgeous! I guess I've never had a dress altered this much and I'm just not super aware/confident in the process. I just need to have faith and it'll all be fine.

Heather, what a beautiful dress! Usually there's enough extra on the hem to open it up a little bit! Good luck and keep us posted Smiley smile

Mines was also big when it came in. So big that I could step into it and pull it up over my head without disturbing my hair (I wear a curly Afro most times). Alterations helped it fit like a glove on the day of. Trust, it gets better.

My dress came in huge as well -about 1 size too big. So much so, that it looks different that the sample. My 1st fitting is tomorrow so I'm hoping they can work some magic. Did you discuss the things you don't like about it with your seamstress? Or maybe take it to someone else?

I think it looks great on you! Though I can understand you not feeling comfy if you don't feel it's fitting right.

I know what you mean though, and especially about the boning. Mine was the same (because I have no boobs), when I went for my fitting, I was not convinced it would fit ok. It looked ok in the end.

    Beautiful dress!

Here is a close up from my alterations appointment. The clip at the back just pulls your boning to the wrong spot. The darts in the front with the boning will be adjusted so they sit over your chest correctly - mine was too big too and you can see how much they took it in. I also could have had my waist taken in but I just decided to add a sash so I wouldn't have the stress of worrying if my dress would fit. I'm on mobile, so this is my before and I'll upload an after in a second!

Mine won't zip. I have to lose probably 15-20 pounds to make it fit. But that's my own fault for gaining so much weight during my pregnancy. I know you're supposed to gain weight when pregnant but I went overboard. I have my first fitting Saturday and I'm so embarrassed. The seamstress will probably take one look at me and tell me I need to lose weight or I can't wear it.

I think yours is gorgeous and will look fantastic once they fit it to you. As LoveInDC said, clipping it on you is entirely different from having it altered. I think it's going to look better than you think! I personally wouldn't remove boning because the dress can slouch without it and you can get a weird crease in the middle of the dress. I would voice your concerns with the seamstress. I'm sure they'll put your mind at ease.

Mine is pretty big on the sides and in the boob area. The sales person at the shop told me that my dress should fit better than regular clothes once the seamstress is done with it. I'm crossing my fingers because at this point my boobs are completely lost in the dress and the straps fall completely down. I absolutely love it though

Here is a shot so you can see - my illusion neckline previously hadn't laid flat at all - I still occasionally had to adjust it but it was so much better. I didn't notice the boning at all - it sat just right and I felt like it fit so much better. I'm not a small person but I felt like I had so many photos where I looked so beautiful because of my dress fitting correctly. I almost gave up on my dress about a month before the wedding because my first alteration appointment was done terribly and didn't fit anything, but I switched and I'm so happy I did. I wound up loving my dress again.

I think it looks great on you, but is this before or after alterations? My dress was HUGE and while the seamstress did a fantastic job taking it in 4 sizes, I still had to stuff my bra the day of so make the top fit better. I mentioned it on our honeymoon and DH goes, "I thought your boobs looked great!" LOL, so there's that. Maybe I should stuff more often haha.

Jen that dress is gorgeous on you but I understand where you're coming from. The first dress I bought (I ended up getting a different one) had boning and I hated it. It made my boobs look so freaking odd. I would ask about taking it out and see what they say if you don't like it. But, the dress is beautiful and after some alterations it WILL fit you like a glove.

Thanks ladies!! And so many beautiful dresses are being posted! Smiley smile You are making me feel so much better.

After googling some, I'm thinking maybe removing the boning isn't what I'm searching for either, but maybe clipping the boning so it's not so obvious all the way down my body. I'm going to trust my seamstress but I'm going to point out my concerns. I've been busting my butt in the gym, and working on a flatter stomach and I feel like the boning makes me look bigger than I am.

I haven't read all the comments, but just wanted to let you know that alterations will fix everything. I just went to my first alterations appointment this past weekend and there were several little tweaks they are doing, because my body does not fit perfectly into a stock size! The hips needed let out about an inch, the bust needed to come in by probably 1.5-2" on each side, and of course taking the hem up because I'm short.

Everyone's body is different, don't sweat it! The dress looks beautiful on you, even if it is just clipped on. And I think it will look great with or without boning - go with comfort on that.

    Thanks Kiwi Smiley smile

I think I'm overthinking. I just couldn't help getting a little discouraged when I saw it and looking back on pictures.
