Mentioning the gift in thank you notes?

Future Mrs. Dotts, on September 1, 2016 at 7:18 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

So I've heard mixed opinions as to whether or not to mention the gift in thank you notes. What did you guys do?

I did in order to make it more personalized.

Yes! Definitely mention the gift specifically. Like Kimi said, it shows the gifter that you took the time to acknowledge his or her gift specifically and that you aren't just spitting out a canned thank you to everyone.

Yes, handwritten and personalized. not the generic "thank you for your gift" that could have been sent to anyone. I don't think you don't have to specify the exact monetary amount though.

Yes, you should mention the gift you are specifically thanking them for. The only time I was vague is if they gave cash.

For cash: "Thank you so much for your very generous gift. We look forward to putting it toward [whatever] that has been at the top of our longed-for list for years. Now, with your loving help...."

I like making it more personalized, too.

I'm specifying the gift in my thank you notes...for example, in one I said "Thank you for the barbecue tool set...we love to barbecue!"

These notes are giving me hand cramps though...

Okay, thank you! I sent one yesterday without mentioning the gift specifically (it was my first one), and FMIL said I should have mentioned the gift, but I wasn't sure since she herself has said she's a little behind on wedding etiquette. I will mention it from now on!

My understanding is if it was a physical gift to mention it but if it was money don't mention it.
