Making my invites smell

Love Is Real, on September 21, 2013 at 9:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26

I believe that smells can put you in a mood....so I plan to store my invites in an air tight box with gardenia scented candles so when my guest receive them they have a nice sweet smell.

But FH thinks gardenias smell old and I should do something more on a lemongrass type of scent. So I need advise on what smell would be nice and is commonly liked by most people?

Gardenias are my one of my favorite flowers because of the smell, but I am also highly allergic to that smell. I like your idea, but I would just reconsider doing smells because so many people have seasonal or environmental allergies. I would hate for a guest to open up my invitation and immediately be sneezy and red-eyed.

So I'm not being constructive here but had to say when I first read that I though you were going to put LIT candles in a box with your invites and though you were going to start a fire and was like OooooooH NOoooooo!!!

Cool idea btw... I bought new perfume for the wedding so whenever my husband smells it he thinks about our day.

I think vanilla would be nice. Flower scents give me headaches and strike up my allergies. But I like the idea you have.

I'd also be cautious with scents. While you might think that a nice smelling invite puts a nice finishing touch on them you need to be careful with any allergies or sensitivities that your guests may have. Many scents from perfume or candles will give me an instant headache. I can't be around scented candles at all. Just walking down an aisle in a store that has them on the shelves affects me literally in seconds. If I received an invitation that was scented by candles I wouldn't be surprised if it gave me the same reaction. I'd have my husband jot down the important info and then it would probably go promptly in the trash and out of the house.

Now they might not end up being scented strong enough to evoke such an issue however like I said, I'd be very cautious about this plan for the sake of your guests.

I too agree with GameCox. I'm highly allergic to most floral/perfume-y smells. In fact, a few days ago my mom sprayed her house down with a Vanilla White Musk body spray, thinking it was an air freshening spray, and when I walked it, I literally coughed so hard I was almost sick, and now I'm fighting a sinus infection from it. So unfortunately, if I were to get a scented invite in the mail that had a floral scent, I'd end up copying down the info, and tossing the invite. Smiley sad

What about something nonfloral, or not quite as strong, like a fruit, vanilla, or a rose scent?

Actually I am going to go one step closer while it might be a lovely touch and 90% of your guests will probably love it you may have that one guest that whatever scent you choose could send them to the hospital. I know it sounds like I am exagerating but I know a woman who the scent of patchouli will literally send her into an asthma attack that has led to more than one trip to the hospital. While that is an extreme case most strong perfumes can cause me to have an ashtma attack and some will give me a headache I cannot shake for days.

Truthfully if I received an invitation that sent me into an asthma attack there is a good chance that without even thinking FH would immediately dump it in the garbage outside. Possibly without actually having read it.

This is an awesome idea. I love gardenia but the vanilla takes the cake for me. Thank you for this!

Thanks ladies.....I actually took peoples allergies and sensitivities into consideration that is why I not spraying them with anything just allowing the invite to absorb the scent in the box. It will be very light and Im aware that some may hate it but my primary focus are the ones who will love it.

And as long as the person gets the important info, they can toss it because in reality what percentage of people keep their invites....lol

I've never had a fruit or "food" scent like vanilla trigger my allergies, unless it was mixed with a heavy floral or perfume scent. To be honest, I've only ever found one "real" perfume (as in, not a baby powder or fruity scent) that I can wear that doesn't start my allergies, though men's cologne doesn't bother me oddly enough.

That said, I think you'd be pretty safe with a scent like vanilla. Smiley smile

I love this idea. I understand the allergy concerns but there are a few scents that I think are pretty mellow. I think you would be very safe with a vanilla sent. It is very warm and usually not tied to any allergies. As I understand, a lot of floral allergies are due to the pollen. Lots of perfumes have a lot of chemicals in them that make allergies flare. So the way you plan on doing it sounds like just the right way to go. Please let us know how it works out Smiley smile

Oh FH has some input on this idea (and he says cool idea by the way). First he pointed out if you do Vanilla it is also going to give it a certain amount of "old paper smell" like Victorian era. But his other piece of advice be sure that you are avoiding direct contact between the invitations and the candles themselves. Wax has a slight oil to it and that oil will leach into the paper. You might want to put something between the candles and the invitations.

I am with many of the others on the allergies thing. Try to stay away from anything floral (Rose included - someone posted that as an option after saying to stay away from florals). I personally have no problems with vanilla, but things such as strong spices get it going. Someone gave me a pumpkin spice candle, and I love the way it smells but it gave me the worst sinus headache of all time. It sounds like a nice idea and is thoughtful, but you may want to just skip it all together. Better to not do it than to have your invites remembered for negatively affecting someone's health.
