Long Haired Ladies-- Who's doing an updo?

Jersey, on May 2, 2016 at 11:35 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 49

I've shared in the past that I'm doubting every decision I've made so far. I've just accepted it now. But one decision I'm doubting is my hair choice. I really wanted to do a half up/down do. But then I keep seeing photos of updos and am considering an updo now.

My problem is that I have long hair (a little past boobies) and it's pretty thick. The last time I had an updo, it was so much hair that I looked like I had a birds nest of my head. Hideous is being generous. So my question: Are there any other long haired ladies doing an updo? Can I see your trial or wedding day photos? I feel like all my inspiration updos are people with shorter hair!

I'm sorry for two posts in one day. I made the daily post today but now I actually have a question haha

I have long, thick hair (past my butt) and I'm doing a sort of curly braid.

I think with updos with long / thick hair, simple is better. Having tons of curls and complicated things makes it look more like a bird's nest. Maybe you could do a simple bun with some accessories?

I totally feel you on this one Jersey Jen. I have long, thick, really curly hair to about my boobs, and I was thinking of doing a half up half down, or side swept something or other, but my hair trial was a total disaster! I have another trial coming up, but at this point I am thinking it may just be easier for her to straighten my hair and do an updo.

Good luck with this! Sorry I don't have an updo to show you, but I thought I would sympathize.

I have changed my mind on my hair style about 100 times. I have long hair, but it's thick and naturally curly, so if I showed you a picture now it's curled up to just below my shoulders (but in the shower it brushes out to probably the same length as yours.

I think I'm going to try something like this--a low updo with braids. I think it will help contain the thickness and won't have all my hair on top of my head, which is a huge problem with the bird's nest issue. Then again I may just end up with a lower bird's nest, lol.

Yes! I have long hair - mine's past my boobies too. Very thick (I'm Italian) and wavy/curly. I've had my hair done down before for a wedding, and even though you would think my hair would hold the curl, it looked TERRIBLE by the reception. I just knew I needed my hair off my shoulders completely for my wedding. I think with the right hairstyle and stylist, it won't look goofy at all! I think I attached pictures from my trial. We may make slight modifications, but you get the idea.

Ladies with long hair - ask your stylist, if they havent to create a 'base' for your updos by pulling the hair into a ponytail where you want the bulk of the style to sit (depending on thickness, usually including the majority of the hair starting at the top of the ear and down to the nape), braiding it, then pinning it into a bun.

This will take care of the issue of thickness and keep a lot of the thickest hair on the head contained a bit. Then they'll cover it with curls from the rest of the head. Works like a charm every time, I promise. Smiley tongue

This also works with ladies with finer hair - except you slip a hair donut over the ponytail, and curl and pin the ends of the ponytail on top strategically, along with the hair on the rest of the head. In that case it gives you a bigger, fuller bun than you may be able to achieve on your own.

This also creates a more stable base, regardless of hair type.

I haven't had my trail yet, but I'm in the same boat as you - long, thick hair - and I want to do an updo. I'm willing to cut my hair a little shorter if have to though. I don't want to worry about it getting messy or frizzy if it's down and I don't want it to be down if it ends up being hot on my wedding day.

This is my inspiration photo. I'm debating between this or sideswept. But I have fairly long, thick hair as well.

This was my trial. My hair is right about at boob line i'd say and very thick.

I have super long thick hair that also refuses to stay curled. So I always do updos because half up-half down would just be flat in a matter of hours. Your hair styles should know how to not make it look like a birds next. Do something low to avoid it being on top of your head.

I have long hair and am wearing it down or else I'd feel naked.

I've had several updo's with my long hair and Niki's suggestion definitely works great! Every time, that's how the stylist did it and it stayed all night, felt very secure, and it didn't look huge!

You can search Pinterest for updos for long hair, I found a lot of inspiration pics that way.

I plan on doing something like this:

Here's my trial. Sounds like my hair is a few inches shorter than yours, and probably not as thick, but I'm very sure you can find a style that works for you. When my hair was very thick as a teen, I always did updos with pretty tight curls; now there's some back combing and loose curls involved to make up the difference.

My hair is super thin, and much to the dismay of my hair dresser, I washed it that morning.

My hair is slightly past boob level and I'm worried about an up do being too much too...I've never had one. My hair no longer holds a curl, so I don't feel like I have a choice. I'm also willing to take a few inches off though, it will grow back. I really need to schedule that hair trial!

Ahh!! These are great!! And super reassuring! I love the ones of your trials and I'm comforted that they don't look super huge.

I'm also going to ask my MUA about what you said Niki !!

I have long hair and this is my inspiration photo! I really want to show off my long hair (sigh) because i've worked so hard on it... BUT i know by the reception my curls wont be the same anymore plus wind and humidity or whatever else mother nature has in store. i figured an updo is the way to go. Smiley smile My hair is a the small of my back and thick and wavy/curly.

We have the same length hair, and mine is super thick as well. I'm debating between an updo and half up, although I'm leaning towards half up. My hair was so heavy at the end of my friend's wedding with the attached hairstyle.
