Hi all! So I just got back from an end-of-year department lunch with some of my fellow teachers in my dept. At lunch I decided not to have a cocktail, for no real reason other than not wanting one. One of the girls I work with chimes in with "Is this because you need to fit in your f@$!ing wedding dress?" No one was talking about my wedding, and damn! I just didn't want a vodka soda today. Also same co-worker chimed in the other day when I asked our secretary about name change forms with "Or you could just not change your name. Or have him take yours." Maybe I want to take his name? It's totally a choice for the couple what to do with their names after marriage. I want to take FH name.

So I guess my question is what is the rudest/most unasked for thing someone has said about your wedding or marriage. And how do you handle it? I don't give her a reaction I just go "ok" and move on. I'd love to hear some stories from you all to know I'm not the only one with an insane co-worker.

Kristin H., no matter what field (real estate, medical, etc.) You DO NOT condemn another person's personal choices in the workplace. Especially senior staff/management. With that said, the assistant in HR violated my privacy when she loudly commented. The associate attorney challenged me on a personal level. You don't ever do that. For the record, she later apologized. She's currently working with me on a very volatile dissolution.

FH's uncle at Thanksgiving: "Wait, so you're not getting married in a Church? Or by a priest at all? Then why bother with all this, your marriage won't be real." It was a fun dinner.

Otherwise, I've been lucky that everyone has been lovely and supportive.. but wow, you all have some doozies! People can be so rude.

The most unasked for thing someone has said

"Your getting married?! So young" I'm 23 -_- it's my decision my parents approve his parents approve stay out my life. I don't think "AGE" should be a issue as long as your happy ! Both my parents and my in laws been married since 18 now 40&42 , 51&52..

The rudest comment : " Ewww your getting married?! I don't want to get married or have kids" well too bad go be lonely! I'll be happy with my husband & kids!

When we applied for our marriage license, a man who was there getting his said to my husband "don't do it!" And laughed. This was in front of his fiancé. It was painfully awkward.

One girl at my work had made comments before about how she had been waiting forever for her boyfriend to propose. When I got engaged, she said she said, unsolicitedly, "Your ring is okay... Definitely not what I would have chosen."

So I said, "Well then it's a good thing I'm the one with the engagement ring isn't it?"

Just yesterday my neighbors step-mom who I'd never met before threw a little bit of shade...

    "When is your wedding?"

    In October, I can't wait! We're excited.

"Don't be, you just wait & see..."

I'm still pretty new in the process, so I haven't encountered very many of those comments yet, but my best friend from high school, with the best intentions of wanting to help me have the best wedding possible, has said things like "you can't wear a veil. Nobody does that anymore" and other things along the lines of "this is what I did for my wedding and that's the only right way to do it or else you're giving in to what other people want."

Some people just can't be empathic, or even try to be happy for others. I have a coworker who rolls her eyes and makes awful sounds any time I say anything about FH. But she chooses to be single and grumpy. Screw 'em.

"Are you going to wear a traditional dress?"

    "Yes....traditional"

    "Oh...like white?"

    "Ummm maybe..."

    "Oh....I didn't think you'd wear white because you're not a virgin"

Same woman who told me years ago that I should not continue to 'give up the goodies' for free to my SO....and definitely should not move in with him. Also self invites herself to the wedding. Byeeeee.

My favorite was about a longer engagement (we did 18 months) "but the people will forget you are getting married"

FH's uncle, at his family's Christmas party no less, asked if I was pregnant, "Because that's the only reason people your age get married." He had his only child at 18. We're seniors in college, and won't be getting married until after we graduate. Later, FH and I opened a gift from another of his uncles that was a gift card to a nice restaurant. The first uncle then asks FH, "Oh, can she not cook?" Turns to me and says, "IF you're still together next year, I'll get you some lessons for Christmas."
