Knock-off Dress Websites/Ordering online

Courtney, on June 1, 2012 at 12:06 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 39

I am a bride with a serious budget crises. A huge portion of my wedding budget will be for plane tickets for my family of 4 to fly from Florida to California. I was born and raised in California and all of my family lives there so that is where we are getting married no matter what!!! I want the wedding to be a lovely experience for my family to get to know the family I am marrying into.

I am trying to cut budget costs where ever I can. One thing that I don't want to completely sacrifice is the dress of my dreams. I have been looking at several "knock-off" websites as well as people who sell on E-bay. These dresses are custom made so that alone saves me almost $200 in alterations as I am a "top-heavy" girl who needs room up top but not anywhere else.

Has anyone had experience with any of these sites? If there is anyone out there that can give me advice on this, I would be eternally grateful. I think this is the toughest decision I am going to have to make.

Yes. My friend ordered a knockoff and it was a disaster. She had to buy a second "reception dress" just to make it through the day and she couldn't find a seamstress who would even touch it b/c the workmanship was so shoddy. Don't do it.

If you go on recycledbride or weddingbee or preownedweddingdresses.com you can find lots of legit gowns for not a lot of money.

I've heard a lot of horror stories about ordering knock-offs since I've been on wedding wire. I think most of the ladies would advise against it. I'd try for one of the websites Kris mentioned or maybe try to catch Davids $99 sale.

I got my dress dirt cheap from the Bridal store. I found the dress I loved, about to be discontinued and it was $1900.00. After she told me it might be hard to get if it discontinues, I offered to buy the display dress, a size bigger than me it was a six, but I gained weight!!!! I bought it for $400.00. There are also wholesale dress shops here anyhow. You get them for a fraction of the cost at the regular retail bridal shops.

I'd agree with the ladies above. My sister ordered a knock-off and hers looked and fit great...but that is the ONLY good story I've heard.

I agree with the sites above and you may also want to check out second hand bridal shops. Sometimes their dresses are samples, or may just be discontinued dresses that noone has ever worn! Others were worn once for their wedding. I went to one, but they didn't have much in my size (street size 2). Once you got up a few sizes though, they had a room full of dresses!

Try stores like Nordstrom, Macys and Ann Taylor also.

Sample sales, consignment stores, order a white BM gown.......

I had the same dilemma, I do not have a budget that would allow me to spend more than a few hundred dollars on a dress, but I had my heart set on a specific dress that costs about $850 from the designer. I found it on knock off sites for $150 but after reading the reviews, I just couldn't take the chance.

Just recently, I found an eBay store that sold my dress for $170. I checked the reviews and there were hundreds of reviews, ALL positive, no negative or even neutral. I read through some and didn't see any red flags about cheap fabric or sizing problems, so I decided to give it a shot. I'm waiting for it to come in now. I have hopes that it will be perfect, but even if its not, I will have only wasted $170 and will still be able to go to DB and find something off the sale rack.. I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to try and get my dream dress.

I have heard mostly bad things about "knock off" sites

I have had 2 friends order from 1 site and have had no problems what so everSmiley smile

ebay..at least you have more "rights" when buying from there and action can be taken through ebay and paypal if your dress has problems

outta the 2, I would go ebay

There have several posts on this board about the disasters of ordering a knock off dress. Quality will be compromised.

Please don't do it..I see your wedding is in April..you should have time to catch this year's David Bridal 99 sale..I got my dress for 99 there November of 2010..They run the sales throughout the year..yes it takes some luck but I feel that that would be cheaper than getting a knock of dress made, shipped, and fixed..Yes David Bridal is expensive for alterations, but you can take it to a local seamstress in your area for a lot cheaper I'm sure. Good luck!

You may want to look at WeddingWire Blog...they are doing a contest and giving away 3 bridal gowns. Also, the website they're using for this giveaway does customized gowns and the prices range from $99-$400

I got my dress off Ebay from a China Seller and I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE IT—I just don’t recommend it to ppl because what if they get a miss instead of a hit and I would feel sooooo bad if that happened to a fellow bride- Seeing so many horror stories I am overjoyed I found my dress – The quality is impeccable, the design detail is fabulous- it was truly a hit for me—

I wouldn't do the Chinese Knock-Off Site... @Carrie W. Posted a link to my thread that shows my DHGate dress, what they advertised and my real dress. On June 12 I get my REAL dress to take home so I'll be able to do a direct side by side comparison for you ladies.

The fabric from DHGate is terrible. While it "looks" a lot like the dress in the photos, up close the stitching and seams are crooked and not neat, the rouching is poorly done and the bling is NOT bling they're sequins and glass beads that a child would use in arts and crafts class. DON'T DO IT. @Carrie W. posted some great alternatives.

Great for a trash the dress though: Me with my boots and rifle. ha.

Go to Davids Bridal website and click on Sale - then select bridal dresses. They have quite a few out there less than $200 and also between $200 and $300. I'd start there.

David's Bridal have cheap dresses like the ladies mentioned before. However, if you do decide to order off Ebay, I would suggest to buy from a top seller and someone who you can return items back to if not I would not deal with Ebay. But is Ebay is like my best friend now.

Look into buying off the racks at DB. (sorry if this was mentioned, didn't read through) I bought my $800 for $300 because I got it off the rack, they fixed any bead work that was messed up from others trying it on, as well as cleaned it, for free.

I got my dress from http://www.edresst.com. Like you I was a nervious wreck becuase of the horror stories i've heard. It took a little over a month to get the dress but I was SOOOOO happy with it when it came. It doesn't look cheap, the stitching is well done and there is still boning in the bodice. Better yet, they really did make it to my measurements and it fits perfect. The trick is having a friend take your measurements with you to make sure they're accurate.
