jury duty, the week of my wedding..UPDATE

ashley, on October 22, 2015 at 6:06 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 24

Is this a f*cking joke? stress level is through the roof now.

ETA thanks for your advice ladies, i called the fayette county courts office today and talked to the lady and she was great! she said to just fill out the paper work to ask for the first few days after my wedding off, and she would grant them to me. i only have to "serve" in december so it won't interfere with my january honeymoon. she told me i shouldn't postpone because none ever wants to do anything in december so it was a great time to "serve" and it is very unlikely i will have to appear. thank goodness, i am so relieved.

This has to be a joke. Lol. Really? Hmm. There has to be a number to call to explain that it's your wedding week and you can't go.

As a lawyer who clerks for a judge, getting off of service will vary greatly depending on the judge. Mine would be lenient and would excuse you if we had enough on the panel. However, we have one who would never excuse anyone bearing being in the hospital or something equally serious preventing service. It won't hurt to make a call or send a polite letter requesting to be excused. I hope you've got a judge like mine! Good luck!

I never get jury duty and I've actually wanted it - but it sucks that it fell on your wedding week Smiley sad hopefully you don't get selected!

That sticks! I called called in for jury duty when I was in college and all I had to do was call in and say I had class or something. This was in Massachusetts, it was really easy to get excused one time.

The problem with postponing is that we are leaving for our honeymoon the 2nd of january so i wouldn't be able to do it in january either Smiley sad

I think you can postpone it for like 6 months.

Usually you can reschedule jury duty at least one time. Try calling the # on the summons to see if you can change the date you have to report. Or sometimes you can just show up at the court house on weekday before your scheduled jury duty, you serve and that negates the summons for the later date.

Usually they allow you to reschedule up to twice. I got called in for jury duty one week before my bachelorette party (August) and I rescheduled it for December.

I got a jury letter for the day after I got back from my honeymoon. I just called and told them I was on my honeymoon and they rescheduled it on the phone with me. I would definitely call and see if you can postpone it.

Depending on your city I think you can postpone it – I was able to postpone mine for six months, and they didn't even require a reason why.

Usually you can reshedule. This same thing happened to my sister. She postponed and went 6 months later.

You should be able to delay it for several months. I definitely wouldn't roll the dice and do it; at the very least, call the clerk and see what they can do for you.

Call and ask to defer. I was able to do it twice when I was in college and living several hours from where I was registered to vote, and they let me defer by several months.

I received my first jury duty letter the week after I moved to NC (from CT). I just called the phone number and said I recently moved.. I haven't changed my license over (though I should have by now.. I should have a while ago) - but at first I didn't have time to go in to take the test and then we got engaged. So I decided that since my CT license expires after we get married, I can just get the new license with the name change after our wedding date.

But.. I've heard there are ways to get out of jury duty - though I'm not sure if it's true. You can google it.. However if you are up for orientation already, I'm guessing you already went through the screening process??

So sorry it lands during your wedding week.

I'm a teacher and got jury duty during the school year. Obviously they won't let me out but I asked if I can get it postponed for summer and it worked.
