Is it rude to ask guests to attend my wedding, 250 miles away?

Bridget, on July 12, 2017 at 2:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 46

My FH and I would LOVE to get married at his family’s cabin, located 250 miles away from where we live. For most of our friends and family, traveling to the cabin takes 2.5 hours by car. To accommodate guests who wish to stay the night (those who want to have a few drinks), we reached out to the nearby resort that has plenty of quaint 2-3 bedroom cabins that rent for ~$125 per night, but that require a 2-night minimum stay. That means that guests attending our wedding will be forced to drive more than 5 hours in one day (2.5 hours each way), OR give up their entire weekend and pay $75-100 per person for a cabin. Is this too much to ask? I don’t want to inconvenience. We haven’t yet finalized our date or any other details, so it’s not too late to change course. But to us, it’s very important to get married at our favorite place and also very important that our loved ones are there to celebrate with us. Should we ask a few of our family members whether it's too much trouble? Help!

Is the nearby resort the only place to stay?

I'm getting married 1.5 hours away from our hometown and most family, I did ask VIP's if they were ok with the distance and all were.

The people who want to be there, will be there.

Nope, there are 3 hotels within 10 miles of our venue. But any guests who need a sober ride to their hotel may be out of luck: there aren't any taxi companies in town. The resort is a 2-minute walk from the cabin, and thus ideal.

This is the same as a DW. Invite people and inform them in enough time. Be sure to provide them with options. They will let you know if its feasible.

    ETA: this is not rude

Get married there if you want, but make sure the guests are properly hosted (food and booze). Also provide transportation for them since there aren't any taxi companies.

ETA: Transportation in regards to the wedding only.

I don't think so. Just be prepared for lots of regrets. Your close friends and family will come though.

If that's where you want to get married then do it. I don't think it's rude.

My mom, brother and sister travelled 4 hours one way for my wedding. My BM travelled almost 6 to be there. The important ones will do it. If it's too much then they won't attend.

Hi bridget! this sounds very similar to my wedding. we are getting married at a resort about 1.5 hrs from where i grew up. some of the guests have cottages/lake houses in the area, but many will have to stay at the resort. we had a destination wedding type decline rate (about 40%) but all the people i really wanted there are making the effort. our family and friends tend to travel a lot though, so staying in a hotel wasn't a huge financial burden on them.

It's not rude, but I would consider it to be a DW and therefore may have more regrets than normal.

You get married wherever you want, if people want to come and don't mind the expense they will come. Maybe don't expect 100% attendance but I'm sure plenty of people would be happy to do it.

We had many people travel MUCH farther than 250 miles to attend our wedding, no one was forcing them to!

FH and I are from different states (and live 5+ hours from both), so we knew going in that 60%+ of our guests would be 5+ hours away, no matter where we have out wedding. We just held it at the place that made the most sense to us, and if people can't make it too bad.

I recently went to a wedding that was a 2.5 hour drive, and the resort required a two-night stay ($150/night). It would have been difficult for us to get there on a Friday because I could not take off work, and afternoon traffic would have been a nightmare. I also did not want to spend $300 for what should have been an in-town wedding. To be fair, the bride was the sister of one of FH's friends, who I had never met and did not even know existed until her name showed up on FH's list of guests for our wedding. I would be much more willing to spend that time and money for someone I am close to. Fortunately, when I called up the resort and requested a one-night stay for the wedding, they were accommodating. We went to the wedding, and it was a lot of fun.

The cost of travel to your wedding is not your concern. Hosting them well once they are there...is. Have the wedding wherever you want. Invite whomever you want. Let them know the details and how to arrange travel. And leave your guests to decide for themselves.

You can invite them and give all the lodging details then they can make the decision themselves. It's YOUR wedding; go where you want. If it is important for you to have everyone there then this may not be the best option

I think it's fine! Those who can't make it, won't. I think the only thing to consider is for those who can't make it you just have to be understanding of it.

I got married local to where I live, which was a 5 hour drive for all of my family and most of my friends. I was a little worried that I was burdening them but they all came and had a blast. I just made sure it was a kick ass party!
