Is it rude to ask guests to attend my wedding, 250 miles away?

My FH and I would LOVE to get married at his family’s cabin, located 250 miles away from where we live. For most of our friends and family, traveling to the cabin takes 2.5 hours by car. To accommodate guests who wish to stay the night (those who want to have a few drinks), we reached out to the nearby resort that has plenty of quaint 2-3 bedroom cabins that rent for ~$125 per night, but that require a 2-night minimum stay. That means that guests attending our wedding will be forced to drive more than 5 hours in one day (2.5 hours each way), OR give up their entire weekend and pay $75-100 per person for a cabin. Is this too much to ask? I don’t want to inconvenience. We haven’t yet finalized our date or any other details, so it’s not too late to change course. But to us, it’s very important to get married at our favorite place and also very important that our loved ones are there to celebrate with us. Should we ask a few of our family members whether it's too much trouble? Help!

It's not rude to ask them to attend. You're inviting them and they get to decide if they can swing it or not. We are getting married a 5-hour drive from where we live and on a Friday, which clearly requires an overnight stay. We have 85 guests coming, which is what we were hoping for!

I agree with PP that this would be a DW wedding n not rude at all. With DW, you do have to expect more declines though.

Are the hotel farther away cheaper without a 2 night minimum? If so, I would make a block there and provide transportation for your guests.

I would consider this a destination wedding and as long as you give people enough time to plan, those that are able to will come.

Most of our guests will be coming from much farther. This is a completely ok thing to do!

Plan your wedding where you want to. But, keep in mind how important it is to you to have certain people there. If you really want all those people to attend, you may want to find a location closer to home. But if you are ok with people declining the invite, go ahead with your plan. There is nothing wrong with asking them to drive that far for your wedding. As long as you do not demand that they attend or make them feel bad if they need to decline. They will decide if they are able to make it work or not.

Are there any regular hotels in the area? You could also look into a room block there for your guests. Most do not require guests to book multiple nights to get a deal on the price.

Like AshleyR, we're getting married local to us, and other than perhaps 6-10 local friends, everyone lives at least a 5 hour (one way) drive away. We scheduled our wedding on the Saturday afternoon of a 3 day weekend to hopefully reduce the amount of time our non-local family and friends need to take off work. We've already sent StDs, and whoever can come, will come. Whoever can't come, well, we'll miss them. I know for sure that my parents will not be there (my dad will be pushing 90, and my mom will be 87 and suffers from dementia. They live over 1000 miles away). That saddens me, but I know they would be there if they could be.

We chose to do our wedding where we live, which is hours away for all guests but 5. It's your wedding. You do you.

We are getting married 3.5 hours away from where we and all of our friends live, near our cabin actually Smiley smile we decided to provide shuttles two and from the hotels which are ten minutes away from where our ceremony/reception is.

I don't feel rude, and a lot of my friends have already booked their accommodations.

If you live your cabin as much as we do, I think you know what the right answer is.

Fh and I along with my 10 yr old son, 8 month old daughter, dad, step mom, 2 sisters, 2 brother in law and 3yr old niece... just traveled 12 hours (including stops) to my cousins wedding. If someone wants to be there they will be. We made a vacation out of it. Spent a good bit of money on the house to stay. But we wouldn't have missed his wedding no matter how far away it was!

I don't see any issue other than the two night minimum. The super easy solution to that is to provide a shuttle for the guests to the three hotels.

About 120 of my 150 guests are OOT; some are even traveling internationally. For those ~120 guests, they have to stay two nights. $125 for a resort cabin is very affordable (my hotel blocks range $206-$139/night in DC). Your guests will consider themselves out-of-town.

I live in NYC and am getting married in Orlando, FL. You're wedding is def not rude. Just treat it as a destination wedding and properly host your guests.

It's not rude, just be prepared for some extra declines. I would have LOVED to get married near where we're honeymooning, in FH's family vacation home...but the nearest airport is a long ways away and our OOT guests would have had to fly in and then rent a car and drive for hours, so we opted not to since many of our VIPs live in another state.

Mines a DW. I told them that's what's happening. I didn't ask. But everyone knew that I had planned on getting married elsewhere. Midwest is boring. My brother called and asked if I would be mad if he didn't come (due to work). I told him I understand people won't be able to make it. more people are coming than we expected.

We have people coming in from CA for our PA wedding. Some brides and grooms on this site have international guests invited to their weddings.

Plan the wedding that means a lot to you and your FI. People can choose whether to attend or decline.

I don't think its rude at all. FH and I are getting married in FL. Every guest is coming from up North (PA, NJ and MD). Obviously this is going to require them for staying more than a night and paying for lodging. If people want to be there for your day, they will find a way. Most people will probably make a mini vacation of it.

This isn't rude at all, just give them as much info for accommodations and travel as possible.

Our wedding is where we live, but is out of state for 80% of our friends and family. It would have been that way pretty much wherever we got married, since our family is spread across the country and several live internationally.

So do what's convenient for you and just give them as much notice and info as possible.
