Is it okay to not have an open bar?

Kellie&Ryan, on August 26, 2014 at 5:20 AM

I feel these days that it is almost expected of couples to have an open bar. Me and my FH have decided not to because its just too expensive. Maybe we'll do a toonie bar or give everyone 2 drink tickets? Or maybe just do open bar for cocktail hour? What are your thoughts on this??

Original poster, don't listen to all these people with sticks up their asses. You know your guests. I think following rules for the sake of proper etiquette is the most offensive thing you can do. I would hate it if I went to a wedding and could only have one type of beer or wine. I would much rather pay for my drinks. I don't know where yall come from but I have never been to a party myself or hosted a party where the host paid for everyone's drinks. I don't know why a wedding should be any different. If you're having a destination wedding and expecting someone to pay for flights, hotels, etc, then I can understand. But most people I know go to a wedding to be there to support the couple and have fun, not to be pampered. I would much rather have the option to pay for whatever drinks I want than to be limited to your budget. The comment about "Just because it's regionally accepted doesn't make it tacky." made me laugh. I thought something was tacky when it made people uncomfortable/upset. If people are okay with it in your region, how could it possibly be tacky?

Honestly, you know your guests best. I have been to plenty of weddings where I live with cash bar...to the point where I even had to pay for soda...and never once batted an eye thinking it was odd.

Until I came to this site I didnt even realize so many people had open bars because it isnt common in my circle of family/friends.

It wasn't even a question for us. Open bar it is. My fiance and I discussed how we did not like going to weddings with cash bars, and would not do that to our guests. Our party = we plan on paying the bill. I do think that if you can swing it, just beer/wine would be just fine though! We omited some of the other things (favors, photo booth, extravagant centerpieces, etc) so that we could work it in the budget Smiley smile We figured the full open bar WAS our favor!

We paid to get an event license to provide our own alcohol. We will only have wine. When it's gone, it's gone. Our reception is in the middle of the afternoon and the meal is on the lighter side. Overall, the group doesn't seem like a bunch of heavy drinkers, so I think we'll be fine. We will also have lemonade, water and sweet tea.

Kendra- its not a bunch of people with stick's up their asses, its people who are looking to make sure their guests are hosted. I don't understand why that is spit on.

I think you should go out of your way to make sure your guests are being treated to a satisfying reception. My priorities for my reception are making guests comfortable and happy with some good food, good drinks and fun music to dance to. They are taking time out of their busy schedules to come celebrate our marriage and I think it is shitty to make it seem like feeling that guests should be hosted means you have a big old stick up your ass.

I have family coming from all over the US... I want them to feel like the money they spent to get here was worth it! If that means free alcohol, so be it! IMO (in my opinion).

Use the search box if you have a question about open bars or cash bars!!!! Can't this just be the #1 rule for WW users?!

These long posts make me want a drink! Smiley smile

It doesn't matter what you serve. Someone will still have a flask in their purse/will be making frequent visits to their car for a nip. Just keep that in mind.
