Incorporating your Soroity into your wedding day

MrsMorales, on January 7, 2015 at 12:27 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 38

I'm looking for any traditions or suggestions for how to incorporation my sorority (Phi Mu) into my wedding day. While this might sound silly to some, my sorority, even after college, has remained very important to me as I'm a collegiate chapter adviser and participate in an Alumnae Chapter locally. I have a ton of sorority sisters who will be attending.

We have a few "Phi Mu" wedding traditions like having a rose colored carnation hidden in the center of bouquets of sorority sister's, wearing your Little Sister's badge on the inside of your dress as your "something borrowed", have pink carnation corsages for sorority sisters who attend, and of course, quatrefoil incorporation where ever possible.

Is anyone incorporating their sorority into their wedding day and how?

A close friend had her sisters sing a Chi Omega sisterhood song during the speeches at her wedding. I thought that was a sweet way to include all of the sisters who attended.

I guess it depends on if your sorority actually has any traditions that they'd typically do at a wedding?

Since my sister was no longer an "active" member when she got married (finished with college at that point), her sorority sisters invited to the wedding didn't do their traditional candle lighting ceremony that they would've done. However, during the reception they all got up and serenaded my sister and her DH with one of their songs. It was really cute and sweet.

Co-ed fraternity. No traditions. I'll have a few members there...I'm going to see if i can entice them to do some strolling.

Nope, we are not. I always roll my eyes and groan when people do their "sorority dances" or chants because it makes me feel like I'm at a middle school party. The carnations and candle lighting sound fine and like more than enough.

I am a member of an NPHC sorority and fully intend on incorporating our sweetheart song as well as some strolling. Since my mother and several other close friends/family members are also members of the same sorority and I'm still active in an alumnae chapter as well, it's actually one of the things I'm looking forward to about the reception!

We traditionally do a candle passing, I do thing I'll add that into the reception. Also, my grandbig sister just suggested all my sisters sing a lighthearted, semi raunchy song to FH...Its one of our "unofficial" traditions that usually occurs when everyone's had a few too many to drink. Lyrics are below---they crack me up everytime:

TAKE YOUR MAN AROUND THE CORNER (recording)

(Tune - I've Been Working On The Railroad)

Take your man around the corner

    Where the lights are low

Put you arm around his shoulder

And the other hand down below.

When he starts to shake and quiver

And he shouts in glee.. YIPPIE

Tell him that's the secret handshake of the Phi Mu Fraternity.

The song is funny, but do you really want that sung at your wedding in front of all of your family? I think my grandfather would have a heart attack.

I like all your ideas except the last one. Please don't do that. I think you've incorporated it a lot already. Do you really need more?

It was more of a joke suggestion. I don't think my sorority sisters will be shouting that over a microphone at my black tie wedding.

Sorry Snarky, I realize my dry sense of humor fails on WW. Wahhh.

I will say that I was one of the drunk instigators of singing this song at my GBig's wedding in 2012. But it was off to the side while we took sorority photographs with the bride and groom...no guests around to witness that disaster. SHAMEFUL.

LOL I had hoped that was the case! But you can never be too sure with some of the things that get posted on here in complete seriousness...

    Strolling is like stepping right?

My sorority is Panhellenic...we once paired up with an NPHC Fraternity for a Greek Week step competition. It went as terribly as expected.

It's coordinated dance in a line. Mostly the NPHC and Latin Greeks do it (but it comes from NHPC). I am at work but if you search on Youtube, you can see several examples (I'm in a Latin Greek org).

If you want to seem something cool, do a search on Stepping. I love watching those (I love the Alpha Phi Alpha ones).

Strolling is done in a line to actual music. Stepping is stomping, clapping. It's awesome to watch.

As someone who loves my sorority and all of the traditions, we are not... he was not in a house, and while I am inviting sorority sisters... college is over, time to move on. I always rolled my eyes when people did that at weddings I have attended.
