Ice cream wedding cake. Has anyone done it?

Sara, on October 13, 2016 at 2:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

My fiance and I don't care for cake but love ice cream, so want to have an ice cream cake for our dessert. We'll have a small regular cake for display and us to cut and the ice cream cake will be back in the freezer. We've having about 110 ppl, so our biggest concern is that when the ice cream cake is served people will be up dancing, at the bar, etc. and the cake will melt while at the table. Has anyone had an ice cream cake before and can shed some insight as to how it went?

I'm not sure how that would work. I think that an ice cream bar would be better. Have you thought of that? You can create an ice cream together and do the whole cake thing with ice cream instead.

We're having an old fashioned ice cream truck pull up outside or venue. The cake may be a bit harder to pull off

I agree with @musicdance17 An ice cream bar may be a better option. The ice cream cake will melt pretty fast and if frozen long enough will be a pain in the ass to cut.

Have you considered skipping the cake altogether and having Cold Stone Creamery (or a similar ice cream place) cater an ice cream bar? They do an interactive, build-your-own station that would be really fun.

I don't know how that would work. My baker was concerned with the real cream cheese icing melting, much less a wedding ice cream cake!

Ice Cream Cakes are my FAVE!! However I'm not sure it could be pulled off at a wedding. :-(

You could have an ice cream bar and instead of feeding each other a piece of cake you could feed each other ice cream. :-)

I love ice cream as well and this sounds amazing buuut realistically it probably wouldn't work out the best no matter how great of an idea I think it is! :-) I like the pp comment about an ice cream bar, maybe build your own sundaes and then have a small cake for people who prefer cake to ice cream... Hmm I might need to investigate this idea further.

Make sure your venue has a fridge! Honestly, I am not a huge cake fan either. We are doing a sundae bar, and settled for sheet cake on guests that enjoy cake!

We went to a barn wedding with an ice cream cake.

I have no clue how they pulled off. Everyone was on the dance floor and they brought the cake out on a small table to the dance floor. They took a couple of pictures and passed around the plates. It was delicious!

I went to a wedding that served ice with the cake, but they didn't do the traditional cake cutting they just passed it out right after dinner.

We just ordered our cake today and as I was confirming with the baker, FH was standing there going, "Are you SURE we can't do an ice cream cake??" We considered it, but decided against it for cost and logistics. But little does he know I am getting him an ice cream cake decorated for his favorite baseball team for the rehearsal dinner!!! Mwa-ha-ha!

I could only see doing this at a place that had a walk-in freezer set not terribly cold, and a freezer delivery van. Possible but certainly amps the number of things that could go wrong (power outage = cake melts, to cold= brick, too warm= melted, cut too slow= melted, etc.) I would talk to an ice cream cake maker if you are really interested. they could probably give you best storage and serving parameters that you could double check with your venue.

I went to a wedding back in May and they had ice cream cake instead of regular cake. They sliced the cake (which was a little difficult to do) and had it available for others to eat, but they also had an ice cream truck. The ice cream truck had gourmet ice cream sandwiches. It was an outdoor wedding in the mountains of NC, so the nights are still a bit cool which helped with nothing melting.

You CAN do an icecream cake. It just has to be kept frozen until serving. Check these places https://pin.it/5mmBS23
