I will always love you

Tamara, on September 14, 2017 at 8:20 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 48

Hi ladies/gents,

I am not trying to be judgmental or anything of that sort for feeling this way about this topic, so please give me guidance if I am wrong. ( I just want to make sure my fiancée and his mother don't look some type of way at our wedding)

Basically, she called him last night and said to him she wants Whitney Houston's I will always love you" to be the mother-son song. (for their dance)

I thought it is way too intimate and just weird, and they should pick something else? AGAIN, I AM NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN... I just always associated that song ( which is my all time favorite, by the way) with romance between two lovers, not between a mother and her son.

Please advise.

Thanks

xo

Yeah it's weird but in the grand scheme of things it's probably harmless. What does fh think?

I also associate it with romantic feelings but I think people realizing it's a mother and son dancing will understand.

I think because the song will be played for a mother and son it won't be taken out of context at your wedding.

It seems kind of weird like she's loosing her son to you or something. Maybe a little dramatic? It's a small thing in the grand scheme of things but if you feel like it's really going to bother you talk to fh about your feelings.

The only problem I see is that the song is 4 minutes 31 seconds long.

Agreed, I think it is a love song. What does FH think? I don't think it really matters so much, but if he thinks it is odd, perhaps he kindly suggests other songs to her.

Eh......while I realize that most people don't pay that close attention to the dances (sorry, it's true....) that one weirds me out a little. And I'm pretty good with that.

I'd ask your dj's for alternatives to present to her. She may not have done a lot of research on it.....

I have always associated that song as a romantic song, but after singing it in my head just now, I don't think it really will be taken the way you're feeling it would. What does your FH think?

My FMIL wanted to dance to always by Atlantic starr! If no one knows that song please look up the lyrics lololol. When she told us this, we all looked at each other and then her. FH played it for her and said "NOPE". Haha.

Agree with Celia! Ask your DJ for similar suggestions that may be a little more appropriate.

I'd be weirded out too, but wouldn't put that one past my FMIL either....

Nonna - he asked what I thought, and I basically told him exactly how I feel. I don't sugarcoat things with him or anyone else for that matter Smiley laugh (Glad you agree!)

Ashley - I mean, I also think it is DRAMATIC!! I feel like she feels that way ( like shes losing him to me, but I always include her in everything) She actually cried at my bridal shower when he showed up and my friends were pretty weirded out about it.

txncdelphia - jeez, I didn't even realize THAT part. THANKS!! haha

Celia Milton - thank you, Celia - I am glad you agree. I will ask the DJ for other suggestions.

Future Mrs. G - OMG - my FMIL actually had that song on the list, too!!

Thank you all for your responses, seems like majority agrees with my feelings!

I never cared for that song. Reminds me of a break up song. What if the instrumental version is played?

The only thing I think is weird about it is she's walking away from the relationship in the lyrics so I would be curious about that if I witnessed a mother/son dance to it at a wedding.

It's definitely not the weirdest song for a mother-son dance, but I see how it's a little weird.

If your FH is uneasy about it, I think asking your DJ for recommendations and FH suggesting something to his mom from the DJ's list would be a good approach.

I can understand what you mean- but I still think it's totally appropriate.

I agree that it is a little strange but I think it is fine. Since it is a long song it will need to be cut a little anyway, so you can remove the more obviously romantic parts.

Ehh, I do agree that it's a little strange and even dramatic. But I wouldn't fret over it too much. Like Celia said, I doubt many people will be paying close attention to the dance anyway. It's a moment between your FH and FMIL so if that's the song they want to dance to, then that works. I know the song is on the long side too, but I'm sure the DJ won't be playing the entire song anyway.

My sister (half sister) and her mom love that song and it has always been their song between mother/daughter. I wouldn't think anything of it.
