Hi ladies/gents,

I am not trying to be judgmental or anything of that sort for feeling this way about this topic, so please give me guidance if I am wrong. ( I just want to make sure my fiancée and his mother don't look some type of way at our wedding)

Basically, she called him last night and said to him she wants Whitney Houston's I will always love you" to be the mother-son song. (for their dance)

I thought it is way too intimate and just weird, and they should pick something else? AGAIN, I AM NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN... I just always associated that song ( which is my all time favorite, by the way) with romance between two lovers, not between a mother and her son.

Please advise.

Thanks

xo

It's not Afternoon Delight, I think you're okay.

That being said, it IS long, so make sure she is okay with cutting it short (like, in half).

My H and MIL had "I'll be there for you" by Bon Jovi. Definitely a love song and not a mother son song. But that's what she wanted and she's obsessed with Bon Jovi. No one is going to think, ew this is weird for a mother son, they'll take to context of it and morph it to mother son in their minds. At least, that's what I do.

Richard - I wish this was the biggest disagreement between her and I! Smiley laugh

And it is funny I never knew the original story of that song... hm... Makes me want to look up that story in details.

That song is a love song about a romantic break up. Could you maybe point that out to her gently?

I think it's a very odd choice for a mother son dance.

Emma - well, my FMIL cried at my bridal shower when he showed up at the very end.

I don't get it, she is always included in EVERYTHING.

Ultimately, songs can mean whatever you want them to mean. They are written to be applied to the listener's life. Unless there is something overtly sexual in the song, I don't think it matters that much.

Yikes stripes!!! Isn't that a break up song? Plus it is a very long dramatic song. Yea I would be trying to steer her in another direction. I agree ask FH and if he isn't feeling it I would have him pick a song and tell his mother he heard the song and wanted to dance with her to it! (That's and easy way to get a mom to change her mind! Then she can say my son wanted this song for me and him!)

Can you even dance to that song? I would put a hard no on that. It's WAY too dramatic, long, lyrics are weird, and just all around not appropriate for the event.

I do usually think of it as a love song, but some of the lyrics could totally work coming from a mother to a son:

" I hope life treats you kind

And I hope you have all you've dreamed of

And I wish you joy and happiness

But above all this I wish you love"

I wouldn't overthink it too much.

ETA: Richard is correct, it was NOT written as a love song or a song between 2 people who couldn't make a relationship work:

Country music singer-songwriter Dolly Parton wrote the song in 1973 for her one-time partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, from whom she was separating professionally after a seven-year partnership

The DJ can always cut/fade out the songs. All of our songs were cut - even his mother/son song was cut even though it was under 4 minutes. Most of our songs were only 2 minutes.

Not sure if it's been stated in the comments yet, but Dolly wrote this song for her long time manager who she had NO romantic ties with. It's about loving and loving enough to let go. Which is what your FMIL is (hopefully) doing

Agree with Teresa - since it is being played for the mother son dance, people will probably just think about the lyrics differently, maybe for the first time. Or they won't think about it. It's really a break-up song, so I guess if mom is thinking about this as a break-up of some kind it works?

I'm dancing to Britney Spears "Soda Pop" with my dad because I always used to dance around the house to her albums as a kid and make him dance too, we even had a special dance made up to that song. I'm not concerned people will think it's weird. Maybe they both just like the song

I'm fairly sure that if she cried at your bridal shower then dancing to this song is going to involve her clinging to him and sobbing for the full duration. So be sure to cut it as short as you can if they end up going with it.

However, if your real concern is them looking "some kind of way", I promise no one in the room is going to hear the song, see them dance to it and assume they are incestuous lovers. That's nothing to be worried about.

I have a friend who did her father daughter dance to "No one Else on Earth" by Wynona Judd. It's a biiig break up song. But she chose it because it's the song she and her dad jammed to when she was growing up. Maybe there is some meaning with this song for his mom?
