Hi ladies/gents,

I am not trying to be judgmental or anything of that sort for feeling this way about this topic, so please give me guidance if I am wrong. ( I just want to make sure my fiancée and his mother don't look some type of way at our wedding)

Basically, she called him last night and said to him she wants Whitney Houston's I will always love you" to be the mother-son song. (for their dance)

I thought it is way too intimate and just weird, and they should pick something else? AGAIN, I AM NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN... I just always associated that song ( which is my all time favorite, by the way) with romance between two lovers, not between a mother and her son.

Please advise.

Thanks

xo

I think it's an odd song to pick for the Mother-son dance. However if your FH is okay with it, then you should be too. If he didn't agree with the song you picked for your special dance, would you change it?

Odd.. lol. But I'd let FH make the call on this one. He's the one who would have to endure the interesting choice of song. If he doesn't care, is just let it go.

My FH and his mom are using it ONLY because his father recently passed away and it was his favorite song and surrounding his death we kept hearing the song EVERYWHERE and every time we bring up with wedding or anything we will somehow hear this song randomly. Its their tribute to him as if hes there dancing with them.

The song was originally written by Dolly Parton when she left Porter Waggoner's tv country music show, where she was a featured performer. He was her mentor professionally in many ways , but she was ready to move on. Different singers, and in different plays or movies, have made it sound a romantic ballad. But it is the song of someone moving on from a person who loved and helped , not specifically a boy girl romantic love. So if it is what she wants, at this time in life, when once and for all he is leaving his mom and birth family, moving on to marriage and his own family, it is not an inappropriate song.

I am a dedicated Whitney Houston fan... if my fiance's mom ever requested that song fro their dance I would take her to Olive Garden, get her tipsy, and then explain that there is no way that is going to be a thing. Play "I wanna dance with somebody: and call it a day!

Why does the fact that you like one particular version of the song, whose interpretation is not the same as the original done by the person who wrote it, or of many others who recorded it or performed it for 30 years, mean that someone like a parent who is familiar with all the earlier and original versions, cannot choose the song for it's original meaning, for a song she will dance to? I think Whitney Houston sang an incredibly beautiful version. But I also like 2 other versions, including by the songwriter, and it was never originally about romantic man and woman lovers. So you love one interpretation different from the original. That is fine, a great version. But if mom grew up hearing the original, why is her wish not valid?
