I ordered the dress!! But question about fit: better to order a size slightly too big, or too small? *pics*

Yay! I'm so excited and ordered my dress! Thanks to all for your support!

But I have a question about sizing. My dilemma is that I'm built kind of straight: small bust and hips, large waist. If something fits my waist, the bust and hips will have to be taken in. But if something fits my bust and hips, the waist gets squeezed.

The woman taking my measurements asked, in a nice way, "Are you planning on losing weight?"

Since I'm currently near my max weight, I said I could lose a couple of pounds to be near my avg weight. But the pounds don't come off the waist area. She showed me the size chart and wanted to put me in the smaller size that fits my bust and hips, but is too small for my waist. But she said the dress has large seams and she can let out the waist.

That made me nervous, so I suggested going one size up, so that the measurements fit my waist, but the bust and hips have to be taken in.

Is one method better, taking something in, or letting it out?

The sample dress was too big (you can see the clips in the back), so it's hard to tell how the correct size would actually fit.

Also, the belt is not included. Can someone please help me find something similar on Etsy?

I would go a little over, they can always take away if they need to but they may not be able to add

You look beautiful and I dont see any reason for you to be concerned about your weight

I would order it at what you fit in now. That way, if you do end up losing weight, you can get it taken in. If you order smaller it in hopes of losing weight, and then you dont...well...then you are screwed....or you end up with a lovely extra panel of fabruc sewn in somewhere.

A little bigger is better. They can always alter it to be smaller, but they can't make it bigger. If it needs to be a bigger size, they will have to ship it back and order a new size.

Order the dress to fit your bigger part of your body. Its easier to take in areas of the dress than to let them out.

ALWAYS better to take in than let out. ESPECIALLY on that fabric. It will totally show the stitches.

I'm built the exact same way. I ordered a size larger than needed. I would definitely recommend ordering larger so it can be taken in rather than trying to let the dress out.

    Gorgeous dress!

If she was a good seamstress, she would not advise you to order a dress that was too small. If you are between sizes, then you have to order the larger one.

Totally agree order larger.. if I'm not mistaken its also cheaper in alterations to take in than let out because it is easier.

I'm built the same way - like a boy with no bust, hips or waist. And since we practically have the same dress I did the size that fit my hips and bust and while my waist was squeezed it actually gave me the illusion of having a figure.

Oh good, based on these comments, I'm glad I went with the larger size. Whew!

@ Analy, good point about how letting out the fabric will show the stitches! I didn't even think about that.

@ Fins, that's true, I would like a little bit of squeeze to give me shape. But I also want to be able to breathe too! haha I just couldn't count on losing 0.75 inches in my waist! I'm blaming it on my ribcage! =)

Once the dress comes in close to my size, then it seems it will be fine to take it in if needed.

I would order a size up to be on the safe side, remember its always easier to take away fabric, not so easy to add fabric Smiley smile

Here is an etsy store that sells a lot of pretty sashes. It's Kirsten Kuehn Designs. I think these are some similar ones to the one you are wearing in the picture. Hope this helps! Smiley smile

First that is a gorgeous dress. I love it!

Anyways about the sizing I was always told by all professionals to always order the dresses a size larger. Its easier when making alterations to make it fit you perfectly. You can always make it smaller but it isn't too easy to make it larger.

I agree with Analy, if you try to have it let out that material will show where the old stitches once were and you will not like it.
