I know this isn't a medical forum, but I hate doctors (no offense!!).

So the other day FH and I were visiting with our friends (a couple) and I bent over to grab something off the coffee table to help Jess clean up, and FH touched my lower back. He kind of poked, kind of just touched, not hard at all. It was the spot right above my hipbones, where you're lower back starts to widen and your love handles are? Yeah, right above my @$$. And I don't think I've ever been in that much pain in my life. It was a horrible, stabbing, intense pain that just racked my entire body. Weird, right? And I don't have back problems, and it doesn't ache all the time, but if someone touches it, I almost vomit from pain.

Anyway, like I stated in my post title, I can't stand doctors. Well, the doctors I've seen. They seem to think that they know my own body better than I do. And due to the fact that I don't react 'normally' to anything from illness to side effects, I just don't like seeing them unless I have to. So...has anyone had any issues like this? What could it be?

I am not a doctor, so my first suggestion would be, despite your aversion consult a doctor. My second comment would be a question....do you know what the sciatic nerve is? If not google it, and you should be able to figure out if that is your issue. Another thing it could be related to sciatica is piriformis syndrome. Trust me when I tell you between my back and my repro organs, I have always been a walking time bomb.

    Good luck!

Have you considered going to a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) instead of an MD (Medical Doctor)? DO's tend to be more detailed in their work-ups and more open-minded for treatment. Like, they wouldn't focus just on your problem spot, they'd look into everything and not just throw pills at you. As a bonus they're trained in manipulations (chiropractic-like therapy) which could help you.

I hate doctors, too, but that's why I spent a long time finding a GP I don't hate so that when I have problems, I can go see him. This is a situation where you DO have to see a doctor, so work with what you've got--but then, I highly recommend taking the time and effort to look for a GP you can stand. I know it's obnoxious, but it's really worth it once you find that rare doctor you like.

Thanks, ladies! I talked to my mom, and her first question was if my monthly cycle was coming up, but I always start on the first, second, or third of every month, so I highly doubt it's that.

Carole, I'm googling that right now. I hope it's not anything that requires surgery. That's the last thing I need right now.

Michelle, WebMD is my FAVORITE site haha. My aversion to doctors has caused me to check it before freaking out.

I know that doctors really only want to help, but I'm one of those weird people that no matter how sick I get, I won't have a fever. And I'll have all the symptoms for illnesses that are so rare, doctors sometimes don't even check them. Countless times I know what I have, and they just tell my 'You don't have a fever' or 'You don't have this and that symptom' and I suffer for months. Eventually I convince them to run the tests, and lo and behold, I'm right. So they've kind of become my last resort.

Little K: I hadn't actually thought of that, but now I might have to look into it. My mom was talking about other medical practices, like acupuncture, and no offense to anyone who swears by it, but one needle makes my hyperventilate lol. Not one's jabbing me all over. Seeing a DO might be a good idea, though.

Cabell: The problem is I've seen almost every doctor in the area. In fact, as odd as this sounds, I actually still see my pediatrician because she's the only one who actually understands that I KNOW my body.

Brian: I totally agree. I just don't want to go in and be told I pulled a muscle lol. Which I highly doubt I did. My dad's been having back problems as well, funnily enough, and he says that he has some yoga positions that have been helping, so I'm going to talk to him a bit, I think.

@Brigh eyes....If it is sciatica, or piriformis syndrome, one of hte best ways to eliminate the pain is stretching, so it makes sense that yoga would help. But, as I said before, go to a doctor. Like Brian said, those sites are not doctors. I use them only as a guide.

I also recommend a D.O. doc, as they do more manipulatives to ease pain. When the DO students were working at the practice I go to, the student doc did some fiddling with my body(can't remember what) and my sinus went away. Smiley smile

How do you look for a DO?

Most HMOs will maintain a list of DOs in the area. Going to a chiropractor might also be a good first move, since if they can fix it with a manipulation, they will; if they can't, then you can move on to a doctor.

So...random confession...chiropractors scare the poo out of me. I rarely crack anything myself, and I'm usually okay with that. But when someone else does it, I swear they're going to break something lol.

Your kidneys are in lower back. If it is them your diagnosis may be as simple as peeing in a cup.

Honestly..yes, i hate doctors too..but in some aspects they are always right, they know what's the best for your health..even if I'm against on what they are telling, the first thing always comes to my mind is my family. So in that case, i have no choice but to follow what they are saying.
