I don't want a bustle!

FutureMrsW, on March 17, 2014 at 4:13 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 31

Everyone is telling me I have to get a bustle on my dress. I DO NOT WANT A BUSTLE AT ALL! I love the fullness of the bottom of my dress and would rather just hold it up while I'm dancing than the bustle. Are there any alternatives??? Im not a fan of how they look and would much rather use the loop to put on my wrist to hold my dress up if I need to. My BMs say that looks tacky and only holds a part of the dress anyway. Any suggestions... or am i gonna have to bite the bullet? :/

I think if you want to do the loop that is fine. I just don;t want your beautiful dress to keep stepped on or ripped!

I never used my bustle but it got (expectedly) REALLY dirty on the grass but I, too, loved the train on my dress and never wanted it up

I'm torn as well. I'm just worried about it getting really dirty and being in the day during photos downtown so I might have them do something simple to it.

I don't know if I want to have my dress bustled or not.. I do not like the way it looks when bustled... I think I will have it added and only use it if I can't deal with the train any longer.

I've posted this type of bustle before and It might work for your dress.

In case your can't tell, it bustled on the side, just below the hip. I have NO idea what kind of bustle it is, but this is my fave.

Otherwise, I have seen seamstresses add a little ribbon handle to the bottom of the train like below.

I'm with you, I HATE most bustles. It always looks like the dress is cascading out of your butt hole, or is stuck in your under-roos.

I had to bite the bullet and get a bustle. I didn't want to have the train on my wrist. I thought that might get super annoying. Talk to your seamstress and have her show you all of the possible bustle options.

I think you will regret it. Your dress will get soooo dirty as the night goes on, people will step on your dress on the dance floor and when you are walking around. It will become very annoying very quickly. Just tie up the bustle after your first dance then it won't be in most pictures but will still be out of the way.

I am so glad Im not alone on this. But when I was in the dress at the boutique and the consultant asked about the bustle i said "absolutely not!" and thats when my entourage went crazy. they were all telling me i HAVE to... including my mom. but i DO NOT WANT it. They called me ghetto when I mentioned the wrist thing. whatever.

I just picked up my dress last week & I was telling my FH how much I hated bustles! My dress has the wrist strap on it & I think I am just going to stick with that Smiley smile I think they all look awful.

Go try on the dress in the store. In front of the mirrors, grab the loop and see how it looks. Does it look okay? Does it look like a lot is dragging the ground? Is it comfortable holding it? Try dancing with a friend to get the full affect.

There are more kind of bustles than you could possibly imagine! I actually think the "side-sling" bustle that SB posted would look nice with your dress, and wouldn't take away any of the fullness:

It will be soooo hard to dance in your dress not bustled. I think a wrist strap would be super annoying. I would get your dress bustled, just in case. It's better to have the option and not use it than to have no option at all.

If you don't want a bustle, don't get one. I don't like how they look either but the alterations manager showed me a style that will work for me. Also, I don't want to trip or get stepped on. You know best what will work for you. Take the advice you like and forget the rest! Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I was told by my dress consultant that the "wrist thing" is actually there to hold up the heavy train when the dress is hanging on a hanger. It's not actually designed to carry your train around all night. So, if that's your plan, I would check the stitching of that to make sure it'll be strong enough all night.

Though, ultimately I agree with LetItSnow, and think carrying the train would get annoying very quickly. Even if you're wearing the wrist strap it's likely to get stepped on.

I'd consider paying for the bustle and then you'll have the choice to bustle it up, use the strap, or leave it down completely.

I was under the impression that loop was to help with the hanging of the dress... lol.

A bustle will actually add to the fullness of the dress. You're adding layers to the bottom. I would speak with a bridal tailor and she will show you examples of your dress on you in all different kinds of bustles. Yours would probably look best done from the side.

IMO, the "side sling" bustle is the only one I can tolerate. THANK GOD my dress doesn't have a train lol

Good luck, I really do believe the side bustle will work for your dress. It will also make the flare part of your dress, look more full (think ball gown like you were looking for)

Also, as much as I hate bustles, I agree with what has been said above. Your dress is bound to get trashed, and possibly ripped. If you are super no-go on it, leave it down for the ceremony, pics, dances, and have it pulled up for the rest of the reception, or for the money you would spend on a bustle, buy a cute white short party dress.

Thanks ladies. I'll talk to the seamstress and see what ideas she has for it. I'll see how the side bustle looks as well. I just know that if i hate it, i wont get it at all. but I am open to trying it out.

I never wanted a bustle but found out that some times using the wrist straps on a shorter train you can flash guests by accident because the train goes up as your arm does. It also can get heavy and rub your wrist. I have a ballroom bustle on mine. That dress would need a side bustle probably and with all that tulle it needs to be off the ground because it will rip easily.
