How to get people dancing?

Amy, on June 8, 2012 at 8:00 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

Originally I planned on doing our "first dance" immediately following the wedding party introduction. If I do that... then have toasts/dinner/cake... how can I get people up and dancing after? I feel like I need some kind of ice breaker, like a "first dance" but something else since Im doing that earlier... thoughts? What are you doing?

We plan on doing a mother/son and father/daughter dance.... would that be okay after cake?

We did first dance as soon as we entered the reception. Had cake cutting after the intermezzo course so that it could be cut up during dinner and then served afterwards. After dinner we opened the dancefloor with a choreographed Foxtrot. This gave me the opportunity to showcase my second dress. after the dance the DJ played an upbeat song and everyone came out on the dancefloor. If you have a good DJ don't worry about this. He will get everyone up and dancing.

If you have a good DJ he'll take care of making sure your dance floor is packed all night.

You could do that snowball type dance...where two people start dancing, then they split and find new partners...each couple splits after a few seconds and drags somebody new on the floor.

Let your wedding party know you want everyone up dancing at that particular time, once they all get up hopefully everyone else will follow. And make sure your DJ/Band knows to play high energy music at that time to get everyone up.

We did the first dance after dinner to open the dance floor - we planned to do the snowball technique for the second song but the dance floor filled up on its own.

Agree if you have a good DJ who reads the floor, the dance floor will take care of itself.

We did our first dance and father/daughter dance as soon as we entered. We just had the DJ say he was opening the dance floor with this song requested by the bride. I got out there with my MOH and it filled up after that.

I agree - that's one of the reasons you hire a great DJ - they can get people up and moving! Ours is a dance master as well and will join in to get the party hopping. Can't wait!

We hope to have everyone on the dance floor right after all the ceremonial stuff is out of the way (our first dance, mother/son father daughter ( at the same time ), and then mother/daughter for my mom since my father has just recently come back into my life) even though our dinner is a sit down dinner as soon as the orders are placed I want dancing to happen LOL

I heard about a game where the bride put the name of a song on each table and when that song was played the DJ made that table get up and dance....kind of cute

Our DJ calls it a "dedication dance". After the parent dances he's going to invite everyone to the dance floor b/c it'll be a song we've chosen to dedicate to all our guests. Hope it works.

I have the same hope for a jam packed dance floor all night long. FH and I devised a detailed plan to make this happen by firstly thinking of weddings we had been to that had a packed dance floor all night. We realized that all of these weddings had a few things in common:

1.) Open Bar (don't lynch me for this, this was based on our personal experiences)

2.) Dim lighting (most people don't like to feel like they are under a spotlight when they are dancing)

    3.) A great band/DJ

So we selected a venue that has adjustable lighting and plan on having it pretty dark in there besides the DJ lights, booked an awesome DJ, and worked the open bar into our budget.

Hopefully it all works out, but I've also been told that it really depends on the crowd and your bridal party as well. Normally, people feel more comfortable getting out there to dance if the dance floor has more than 5 people on it.

I'm actually do a whole program so that why people will know whats coming and won't be sitting trying to figure everything out. But after everything is done we are going to have the DJ to play a line dance which will get everyone up and ready to party the night away.

I agree with Kimmi, I went to one wedding that had one Keg, they created the playlist and the floor was lit up....no one really danced.

If you want a song to get people out there Cupid Shuffle or any songs like it
