How many copies of the marriage license did you need?

I'd get at least 2 - one that you can lock away and one that you can use to copy or send off if someone needs the real one.

I got 5 copies, but haven't needed that many. Most places give it back (DMV, SS office, etc). I did have to mail in a certified copy to change my name on my student loans. I'll also need one to mail in to change my passport.

I'd say 2-3 and you should be good. You can always request more if needed.

We only have the one copy and haven't needed another yet (we were married in April). However, having a backup is never bad. I'd say having 1 backup is good.

I got three. We have one at home that's strictly the copy that we send out/carry with for proof of marriage, one locked up that will never leave the house and one at my Mom's house just in case.

I tell people three, unless they are dealing with military/immigration issues.

I didn't think I needed more than one copy ... Lol

I have 2-3 but have never needed more than 1. Definitely would get at least 2 though, in case you have to send one out. Especially if you don't live near where your wedding is--I could literally stop by city hall on my way home from work and pick up another copy if I ever needed to.
