How did you pick your DJ?

TeamEJ2009, on April 28, 2017 at 1:10 AM Posted in Planning 0 38

I apologize for too many posts. I need some help. There are so many DJs and all with similar prices. How do you decide which one to go with?

We ended up going with the more expensive one, because his personality was outgoing. He was so much fun to talk and our meeting ended up running longer than anticipated. We were looking for someone outgoing and confident in what they did. We sa down and talked to 3 different DJS. Make sure you talk to them on the phone or in person. The DJ sets the tone for everything at your wedding you want to make sure they are good at it.

This is going to sound corny, but it will just feel right. I spoke with a few DJ's, I even booked one, then canceled because he and I just did not connect as far as what my vision was, etc. The DJ I ended up finding was extremely personable and knowledgeable. He took the time to go over every detail and explain his cost compared to the industry, etc. He also gave me great tips on finding a photographer and made suggestions on how to cut back cost. I trust that he will make my wedding day run as smooth as possible.

He picked us. He said "you guys look like a cool couple. I wanna dj your wedding" we told him we weren't planning on having a dj and he said he'd do it at a discount. He has 20+ yrs experience and we vibed well.

I picked 5 DJs based on their reviews and pricing and made a spreadsheet. I listed what they were offering, how long they would be there, extra fees (set up, traveling) and the cost of each one. It really helped me to see all the options laid out and I was able to narrow it down to two. I contacted both and figured out which one would work best for what we needed/wanted.

I can't tell you what will work for you, but I can tell you why I recommend the DJ's I do.

They're not corny, cheesy, they don't dance, they don't have plasma TV's, uplighting or photobooths, they are always there early, they don't dress like slobs, they don't put giant ugly banners on the DJ booth (which always looks neat). They don't do games, they don't miss ceremony cues, they don't mispronounce names and they actually have the processional order and the entrance details down before they are going to happen. We live in an area with very busy airwaves; they bring backup equipment in case the frequencies are a problem (Hudson river area, flight path, marinas....). They play well with others. They have interesting music suggestions beyond 1000 years and I think I wanna marry you. If I have couples that need international music, I have two DJ's that shine in that area.

Most importantly, they realize it's not THEIR wedding; they're not the show, the couple is. Their prime reason to be is to be the catalyst for the evening, to create a soundtrack and concierge the night, not to have everyone looking at them.

And not one of them will say either, "make some noise" or "put your hands together because grandma's in the house".

This is a very subjective list, but it's built on my personal experience and the type of couples we work with. \

You might ask your other pros that you like who they refer and like.

I was at a friend's wedding where the dj there was one I was considering. They did a great job and kept everyone dancing all night, so that solidified our choice. We booked them within that month.

Meet with them. Ask lots of questions (you can find on google great questions to ask a vendor) and then go with your gut.

    Also, read reviews!!

I actually hired one that was at a family friends wedding. I personally wasn't there but the amount of comments I got about how awesome he was made it a deal for me. He was pricer than I would have like to spent, but after meeting him we couldn't back down. He loves his business and entertaining. It was even fun meeting him because he just enjoys everything he does.

Our venue works with certain DJs although we could bring our own. We went with one that the DOC there suggested after meeting with her a few times. She said after getting to know us that one of the DJs they work with frequently would probably match our style.

I really wanted a bilingual DJ familiar with the types of music our guests listen to. A lot of theDJs on here or just Google are more "mainstream" oriented. I needed someone with experience with Latin music as well as Caribbean (reggae, dancehall, etc)

FH and I don't know jack about music so we just asked our photographer and our venue manager which DJs they would recommend. Both were happy to give us a list and one DJ was on both lists. His prices were comparable to others in the area, so bam, done.

I trust their opinions given that they both attend weddings for a living, and they're young and fun and seem like they have good taste.

I went with Celia's recommendation. (Also, the only company to get back to us.)

I asked for recommendations from other vendors we have booked. The DJ we chose was very responsive to my emails, has a lot of experience, and seems to really be interested in making sure our reception is what we want.

But the main thing that stood out about him was that my FH wanted some cultural music for the mother/son dance but didn't know what song. Our DJ offered to help us reseach and to reach out to other DJ's who might be able to recommend some songs. All the other DJ's we met with told us "just tell me what songs you want and I'll play them." The same day we hired our DJ, he sent us about 10 songs he had already found for us to choose from! He's gone above and beyond for us.

We are both ballroom dancers, so we went with the DJ that was willing to work with us on what WE want played.

The first guy we met had the attitude of "I do what I want, if you guys are different, too bad"

the second guy we met had the attitude of " you want things other than what I know? OK, cool, I am willing to work with you and learn so that you get what you want, and I will know what to do for couples like you in the future"

So we booked the second one! He's been great so far!

My WP picked ours. We gave her a genre (recent within the past 5 years with random flashbacks, such Michael Jackson), style Pop and R&B, listed about 3 songs we like and let her decide from there. I think she picked well because once the dance music started the dance floor was never empty. Plus I got many compliments on some song choices. I did not have a song list, DJ just read the crowd.
