How are you making your wedding 'yours'?

Lisa, on July 12, 2019 at 11:23 AM Posted in Planning 1 80

So I've read tons of posts and articles that suggest adding elements to your wedding to make it unique to you and yours. Likely, most people are doing this with color schemes and photos, what else are you doing? I don't want a cookie cutter wedding but I also don't want to over-do it with personalization and such.

As of right now, other than our color scheme, we are planning on using a blown up picture from our engagement shoot for our table assignment (faded photo with the table numbers with the name listed below or in alphabetical order) and getting a miniature figurine of our dog to add to our traditional 'Mr. & Mrs.' cake topper.

I want to add a little more. Mostly our hobbies and interests revolve around sports; we can't incorporate a specific team because we don't like the same ones!! Smiley xd Was thinking of trying to incorporate Italy (we both are Italian and have been to Italy and love it) but not sure how.

The other thing I was thinking was for our favors, do the 'His Favorite' 'Her Favorite' bags; he loves the old school Snow Caps chocolates and I love Sour Patch Watermelon.

Share yours!!

I'm pretty crafty, so I'm making all our flowers out of crepe paper. We're doing a limited bar with named cocktails - probably his, hers, and Zoe's (our dog). And we're also going to use books (either novels we like or textbooks because we're both math nerds) as part of our centerpieces.

We're going super casual with our wedding to make it more us. FH will be wearing jeans instead of a tux because hes just not a dressy person to begin with so why would i try to stuff him in something he doesn't want? Were also doing tacos instead of your traditional plated meal.

Our wedding will be casual. There is also a running joke between my our families, us and donuts so instead of cake, we are having donut towers. I am a unicorn nut so as part of our engagement photos, we bought a unicorn and horse head and did a mock proposal and using that idea, we bought a unicorn and horse cake topper to use as a hidden decoration and we will also be re-creating a wedding photo using this cake topper. We have a regular cake topper to sit on the tallest donut tower but when I saw the unicorn one, I couldn't pass it up. Here are pictures of all.

In the beginning stages of planning, but there are a few things I'm thinking about...

We both LOVE music so that is going to play a pretty big role in our wedding. Specific songs we want, and I'm thinking of doing table names with concerts we've been to. We have been to close to 50 concerts together and I think this would be kind of cool. Going to put the artist, the venue, and the date. So table Dave Matthews Band, Bbt pavilion - camden, NJ, 6/14/2019. If a guest attended a concert with us I'm going to try and seat them at that table. This might be confusing to people and take up too much space so I'm not 100% sure about it, but we both really love the idea.

Next we want to try and incorporate games/activities. Our trunks are literally filled with outdoor activity supplies, balls, can jam, golf clubs, beach supplies, tire pumps ect. This will only work if we find the right venue which is a little difficult with our budget. I am for sure going to add some fun activities and games to our registry.

Finally we are trying to keep things local since we love our new town. Using local vendors whenever possible and I would love to do our first look in our downtown area.

Our venue has an awesome back patio space with bistro lights that we're going to use as a "hang out" spot. We are definitely not the type to have a super big, expensive-looking wedding (we're mostly doing it to appease family), so we decided to use this space for corn-hole, yard tic-tac-toe, and giant Jenga. It's so us and will give us something fun to do!

We are big craft beer people so our centerpieces are incorporating growlers from various breweries and brew pubs that we like. The tables will be named by the brewery on the growler instead of table numbers.

We are also doing a unity beer as part of the ceremony Smiley smile

As a celtic reconstructionist, I knew I wanted a celtic theme although not extremely drastic. Part of how I am doing that is using a specific tartan. As our family tartans do not work with our colors (Blue & green), we are using the Wicklow County Tartan. I had some help from my local grove (druid's fellowship) to find a suitable one that would ruffle any feathers. We are using it in cotton as table runners. The groom and groomsmen will be wearing kilts. My girls and I will have it in our bouquets and they will have it around their waists in the form of silk ribbon. It will also be around the cake and tied around the vases for the wedding party table.

Our colors incorporate both of our favorites! Dark purple (mine), green (his), and burnt orange (to make both colors pop for fall). We want to include pics of our cats on our guest book and in other places. And the night before the wedding we’re having a pizza party with wings (were from buffalo lol) and all our other local favorite foods!

Italy would be great! Italian food & wine, of course. Instead of numbers, each table could be a different Italian city or region (use a frame from the dollar store). You could look up Italian weddings to see decor & traditions. Incorporating either olive branches/trees, rosemary or other herbs/plants into your decor may seem very Italian. Mini olive oil bottles or an Italian cookie as favors.

We find heart shaped rocks wherever we go so we're putting a bunch on the table as part of the centerpieces. Our cake topper will be a Jeep since we both love rock crawling. We're going to add a few more littler touches but we're undecided on what those are yet.

We’re having a travel theme for our love of travel and basically what we’ve done together since we met. The seating chart is an airport arrivals board is all the places we’ve been, want to been or has some significance in our relationship. One of our signature cocktails is our favorite drink and one named after our cat. Plus I got a cardboard cutout of her so she can still be our flower girl. Our Ketubah, cake topper and escort cards are all paper planes which is our first dance song. I also got a bride groom otter topper for his grooms cake - I arranged an otter experience for his grooms gift too. Small touches nothing over the top.

I ordered a lot of personalized stuff, so our menus & programs & welcome pamphlets for hotel guests all say our names and are personalized. We have several boards up with pictures of us, as well as 3 canvas prints from our engagement shoot. Our cake topper is my great great grandparents. We have a memorial table with pictures of our grandparents. Our favors are wine stoppers with our names on them & the Colorado mountains. Most our menu is food from Colorado. We are writing our own vows & doing a wood branding ceremony.

    We're doing a few things:

Songs: First dance is to "Recycled Air" by Postal Service. It was at one of their concerts my FH told me he loved me for the first time. My father-daughter dance is to "La Vie en Rose" by Eidth Piaf- a fan favorite in my family.

Décor: our altar is a fireplace, so we're subtly adding a Green Lantern lantern (FHs favorite) and a Harry Potter Goblet of Fire with the book (my favorite).

Centerpieces: each centerpiece will have a card stating that we're making donations in lieu of favors. These cards- 10 in all- will each have a different charity and what they mean to us. We also thought these would be good icebreakers for guests who may not know one another.

We're incorporating lots of little individual touches! Yellow is my favorite color, so it's our main wedding color. He loves Star Wars, so he is walking down the aisle to the Imperial March and we are entering the reception to a disco version of the Star Wars theme with lightsabers! I'm a big theatre lover, so I'm walking down the aisle to a string version of a song from my favorite musical and will have heart shaped confetti cut out from Shakespeare plays on the tables. My family and I are big Lego fans, so our escort cards will accompanied by Lego minifigures. We're having our favorite local ice cream shop do an ice cream cart instead of cake. And we have a cardboard cutout of our beloved kitty to take pictures with and display at the reception!
