Help!! Wood slabs for cake stand and centerpieces!

Marilyn, on November 18, 2012 at 9:22 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 25

I am desperately trying to find wood slabs for the cake stand and centerpieces, but cannot find them for under $15-$20 a piece. I can't imagine spending that much! Has anyone done this? If so, where did you buy them from? Any advice or tips?

It seems pretty simple can FH cut some himself?

If you're in a area with lots of downed trees and chain saw, I imagine you could make your own. I'm not sure what you'd do to treat the wood tho. Dry and stain? The first one looks more complicated, but the others just seem to be straight cuts.

I say just cut them and sand them and they would be perfect unless you want to seal it then buy some sealing paint!

Would most trees be wide enough you think? I figure I need about 10" wide.

For width, if you cut on an angle they will be bigger, but also more oval shaped.

The challenge is keeping the bark on. Using downed trees, if they have been down for a long time, the bark on the bottom side will just fall off. If you cut them yourself, a table saw or band saw might be better than a chainsaw - less sanding needed and it will be easier to get the cuts parallel giving you a flat slab.

Maybe try contacting a local person that offers firewood and see if you can purchase a section of tree or if they could cut them in slabs. Or try to find them on a site like RecycledBride.com.

I have tried recycledbride, they are still really expensive there. Maybe I will try the farm where we buy our xmas tree from...

    Thanks everyone! Smiley smile

Make sure to use a non-toxic tree or treat the wood with a varnish. Pine and oak are best. Smiley smile Good luck!

We are using this idea for our center pieces and my father cut them for me.

I found a friend with a chainsaw. They weren't cut perfectly but they looked good. I too couldn't believe how much the ones I found from companies online were either! Most people who cut wood for wood stoves will have some trees that are big enough for centerpieces. We did have to be careful with the bark it wanted to chip off easily. So I didn't even sand the slabs. I just laid them up against a wall in the sun to dry our thoroughly then I vacuumed them off with the brush attachment. For the large slab I used for my cake stand I peeled the bark off completely because it was flaking off and I wanted it to be uniform looking. My cake stand was uneven so we had to roll little pieces of cardboard under it to get it level enough to place a cake on. So to cover the cardboard I put some filler nest/moss type stuff from the craft store. Good luck finding what you're looking for!

I bought mine from another bride after her wedding. I could sell them to you after 10-25-13, if you have no luck. I paid $125 for 17 LG ones and 4 SM, I'd give them to you for the same $!

My wedding is on the 20th of January, so that won't work Brandley.

Nicole, save-on-crafts, is pretty pricey.. I feel like most of their stuff can be found cheaper on sale at Michael's and their would slices range from $15 - $35 a piece!

FH said he could do it... but I feel like it will never get done... maybe I can get a good deal at the Christmas tree lot..

Christmas Tree Shoppe might have it, or Michaels too. No matter where you go, they're not gonna be that cheap unfortunately.

Try http://www.weddingwoods.com I got some slices from them and they are really nice. They are finished on both sides and look far better then any other slices I have seen for sale.
