Heavy Appetizer Menu Options

Audra, on April 11, 2012 at 5:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 32

Out of these what would you suggest? I wish my venue offered more. I'll have to schedule a meeting with them to see if they can or I'll have to look for an outside caterer.

Meatballs in Wine Sauce

Cocktail Franks

Tex-Mex Dip with Nachos

Hot Wings

Fresh Fruit with Dip

Fruit Kabobs

Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

Stuffed Mushrooms

Stuffed Potato Skins

Pretzels, Chips & Dip

Vegetable Tray & Dip

Salsa and Nachos

Cheese Strips and Crackers

Fancy Mixed Nuts

Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail

Their options are more like for a party and not a wedding. I saw on another post where you were asking about a Heavy App Reception. If this is all they are offering I would see if they would allow an outside caterer. In my opinion it just isn't a really good selection for a wedding. I know some may disagree but that's just me. I say that because just about everything listed is probably going to be something frozen that is just heated.

I think a combo of hot/cold and veggie/meat is good. Not sure the vibe of your wedding but these sound good to me:

    Meatballs

    Stuffed mushrooms

    Stuffed potato skins

    Cocktail franks

    Shrimp cocktail

    Veggie tray

    Choc dipped strawberries

    Fresh fruit and dip

    Cheese and crackers

And also what Kimberly L said. It's pretty casual stuff. But I don't know if you're having a casual wedding.

Our caterer is doing all sorts of creative fun apps. Some we requested and they're making especially for us. Like, mini potato pancakes with apple chutney. And mini reuben sandwiches. Stuff that goes with our menu.

Audra, I just looked at your wedding page and your inspiration boards. I do not mean to be disrespectful of your venue, but it sounds like a sports bar! This menu doesn't seem to match your personality at all!

The two things that people remember most about a wedding are the food and the music.

Since your wedding isn't on Superbowl Sunday, you may want to rethink this. I'd go for an outside caterer who can give some class to your menu.

    Good luck and best wishes!

If you have not sent your invites yet, I would be sure to include cocktail reception on the invitation it just let people know a head of time that its not a full dinner.

You must include stuffed potato skins.

I would shy away from things that have large spill and stain factors like salsa's. wouldn't want it staining someones clothes.

What time is your wedding? If it is during a meal time and you are including a bar, I would write "Cocktail reception" on your invites. If you are not having a bar, I would just say "light fare and punch reception".

If this is what you are limited to, I would order the following:

    Shrimp Cocktail

    Stuffed Potato Skins

    Stuffed Mushrooms

    Hot Wings

I am assuming your dips would be stationary, so I would go with the Hot Crab Dip, Cheese Ball and Fresh Fruit & Dip.

Our wedding is at 2pm with 2:30pm reception. As for bar, we're doing cash bar (champagne, beer, and signature drink provided with water, tea, and soda too)

I do feel like my wedding is going to look cheap and trashy... and I'm trying so hard. I wish it wasn't coming off like a sports bar. It's actually starting to make me cry.

Oh Audra....I just read your other post. The time is perfect. Put down "cocktail reception" because you are offering beer, wine and a siggie drink. Your wedding is not going to look cheap and trashy. Are you happy with your venue? That is all that matters.

Audra- I think it will be fine. Your are doing it an Elks club right? I've only been to like 2 of them, but they are normally actually really nice inside. When i think sports bar i think neon signs and peanuts on the floor.

And by serving "fancier" foods it will fancy up the reception, serve shrimp, crap, potatos, and mushrooms instead of chips and salsa or pretzels.

What is your theme? i'm sure everyone here can help you find amazing ways to make your wedding awesome in your budget.

I agree with Shellie. Go with the "fancier" appies. Have a few "stations" with the cheese ball, crab dip and fruit/dip. You can make the decor on those tables look lovely.

Not every wedding has to be a David Tuttera look a like. A wedding should reflect the couple getting married. You have a zebra theme. Obviously, you are a fun person. I know your wedding will be fun and beautiful.

We booked our venue after feeling rushed to do so because of how common June weddings are (although on a Sunday we have our pick) but also because we couldn't do anything else without the date.

Our venue is fine but not amazing.

    Pros

Only cost $550 for use of the whole upstairs

    Had a large bar

    Had a wonderful event coordinator

Large beautiful windows overlooking golf course

    Cons

Some decor is set in the 70s namely bar stools and down stairs ladies locker/changing room (new event coordinator suggested as a room to use to change, would be terrible for wedding pictures)

Wonderful event coordinator retired, replaced by Golf Course Manager because "they haven't found anyone qualified to fill the position but they are getting along well without one"

I'm just stressed. Here are some pics:

Honestly- I think it's really pretty. It's not super fancy, but I love the exposed beams in the ceiling.

A good photographer can make sure people are noticing you in the pictures, not the locker room your in.

Audra, There is not a darn thing wrong with your venue. I think it is the perfect back drop for your zebra theme.

Don't stress. You are going to have a lovely wedding that reflects the fun person that you are.

Your wedding will be fun! You are having an afternoon wedding between meal times. Pick a couple hot apps and then some "fillers" like veggies, fruit etc.

Just remember... this is the day that you will marry Mr. Wonderful. People are there to witness your love and celebrate your happiness

    All the best!

Hi Audra. Please don't stress about this. Your venue is wonderful and you are wonderful.

I wouldn't expect a filet or a large heavy meal at an afternoon reception.

    Here are my food picks-

    Stuffed Mushrooms

    Meatballs

    Fruit Kabobs

    Cocktail Franks
