Having to uninvite people due to covid restrictions

Nicole, on August 9, 2020 at 7:48 AM Posted in Planning 0 5
In my state we are only allowed up to 50 guests. Is anyone else looking at having to cut their guest list, after sending them a save the date? How are you communicating to your guests that they are no longer invited?

We are still too far out from our date to know restrictions for sure however, this is a discussion we have been having together. If we need to shrink our wedding considerably, we will sit down together and decide who is most important to either both of us or one of us and who we can both agree on cutting. We will then create a note/card of some kind with our stationary company to send to them explaining the situation and thanking them for their love/support.

I would recommend sending a message/card using the same method (mail, email, etc) you sent your Save The Dates. This website has a few templates and examples of wording for uninviting guests due to COVID: https://theeverylastdetail.com/coronavirus-wedding-postponement-email-templates-to-send-to-guests/

Most people will likely be understanding of the guest list needing to be reduced, since restrictions are being implemented everywhere.

We just had to do that this month too. We’re in VA.
I sent a group text to my coworkers, but hand-wrote thank you cards to everyone that 1) hasn’t replied yet or 2) said yes and it read:
“thank you so much for wanting to celebrate our big day with us. Unfortunately with the new guidelines, we had to make drastic changes to our plan. We’re so sorry, but we have to cancel our invitation. We hope to get together soon, once things return to normal.”

Most websites that carry save the dates/invitations now have "Change the Date" or "Change of Plans" templates that you can use.

We sent save the dates to 130 guests in February. Due to venue restrictions and our concern for everyone's health and comfort, we are cutting that to 30. I am sending "Change of Plans" cards to the remaining 100 communicating that we're having a small ceremony/dinner, and hope to celebrate with them in the future.

I would like to have a large, traditional reception in a year or two, but we don't have anything nailed down yet, so I kept things vague.

Hi Nicole! Downsizing is tough, but you're definitely not the only one who has needed to scale back their wedding so hopefully your guests should understand. ❤️

We have some tips on scaling back in this article: How Do I Downsize My Guest List if I’ve Postponed My Wedding? and you can also check out these forum posts from other couples facing similar situations: Can you take back Rsvp’s??, Cutting the Guest List, and You are uninvited letter.
