Having a dry wedding?

My FH and I decided to have an alcohol free wedding. When we told his mom her response was "You need to think of other people because they will want to drink. If they are giving you presents you need to have alcohol at your wedding." She also keeps saying, "You can't tell people they can't drink." I...

My FH and I decided to have an alcohol free wedding. When we told his mom her response was "You need to think of other people because they will want to drink. If they are giving you presents you need to have alcohol at your wedding." She also keeps saying, "You can't tell people they can't drink." I just reply with "Yes we can it's our wedding" Neither of us drink. My family aren't big drinkers at all. His family loves drinking and typically drink too much and get overly loud. We feel very strongly about having a dry wedding. I am a very quiet person but she is starting to make me mad and I don't want to be mean. How can we get his mom to leave us alone about it?

"Do you what you want!" needs to be retired. It doesn't mean anything and doesn't preclude bad, rude, or tacky decisions on your wedding day.

Your wedding is the part your get married at - the reception is for your guests.

OP, you're right. It is your WEDDING. However, the RECEPTION is to thank your guests for attending. You make it sound like your dry wedding is punishment for FH's family for "typically drinking too much and getting overly loud". Loud? Really, that's what you're worried about?

Have your dry wedding. You're not going to listen to us. Just know that #1, your FMIL is right; #2 you're being incredibly rude to your guests; & #3 guests will talk about your wedding behind your back for years to come.

It is your wedding..and I'm one those people who don't find dry weddings/cash bars tacky, however, your FMIL seems to know the family well and is giving you fair warning that his family might not like it...

I haven't read previous posts because I know the community blows up about this so I don't know if you've mentioned anything..why not try for a brunch wedding or early afternoon wedding? Someone even mentioned a cake and punch reception? That might make it more acceptable to be dry. I wouldn't mind either way, but just be warned, you will probably get a lot of negativity on this topic.

Whatever you decide, it's your day!

    EDIT: misspelling

Wow! I've been to three dry weddings and had a BLAST! Didn't know it was that serious. I'm entertaining the idea myself. My reception will be more like a nice sit down dinner. 2 hours tops. Eh....

And "do what you want" means that we give the OP our advice and if she chooses not to follow it we back off and move on. You're not going to her wedding, it shouldn't bother you enough to keep commenting against her decision.

Have you guys had the Mike's Lite? I rarely find it these days, but I love it. Tastes the same as the regular, just less calories.
