Has anyone NOT had bridal portraits taken?

Amanda, on August 4, 2016 at 10:24 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 94

Hi, still relatively new to WW and this will be my second post. So everyone in my family keeps talking about my bridal portraits and blah blah blah, BUT I'm personally not keen on having them done. I just don't see the need for the added expense especially since my fiancé and I are paying close to 85% of this wedding ourselves.

Has anyone NOT had them and regretted it or has anyone had them and then regretted it? I know it's more of a 'personal choice' question, but I figure since we're going to have an amazing wedding photographer, he will get some excellent shots and I could possibly use one of those instead.

I'm the first person in my family to get married and have an actual wedding (my sister and BIL went to the courthouse and it was very lovely) in close to 18 years so my entire family is in over-drive with planning lol. My grandma is darn near obsessed and is just so tickled and can't stop talking about 'your bridal portraits'.

I'm not having them done and I don't regret it at all.

I'm not doing them, and I don't see the point in them. My photographer has scheduled time for pics of just me the day of the wedding and that's good enough for me, but I know a lot of brides do them.

I'm not having bridal portraits done and it's not common in my circle. My photographer had it listed on his portfolio and I had to ask him what that was. Apparently it's common in the South according to what some have told me on here (I'm from NYC). I don't see how those photos are different from the photos he'll be taking day of.

In any event, I saw another user on here with bridal portraits (Skye where are you?) and hers are gorgeous.

I didn't get them...I just made a little extra time on wedding day to have some taken before our 1st look. I don't regret not making an extra day to have bridal portraits taken. I got enough on the day of. I wasn't paying to get all made up and have pictures taken when it could be done the day of. Too much extra money.

As far as I know, bridal portraits are just a southern US thing. So a great many people do not do them and don't even know they exist. (I'd never heard about them until I moved south.)

@GymRat - I live in NC and they're a pretty big deal here lol. My one aunt actually went and had her bridal portraits done a couple years after their wedding because she was in nursing school while they planned the wedding and she couldn't ever make time to have them done. She said my grandma was damn near heartbroken Smiley smile

I'm not doing them. I did engagement photos. I would much rather have pictures of me and my fiancé together than bridal pictures. Just remember this is YOUR wedding.

I'm from the south and I wasn't aware that bridal portraits for a "thing". I will not be taking bridal portraits. I will have wedding photography on the day-of and that is more than enough!

I didn't because they are not a thing in NJ. I hadn't even heard of them until I came on WW, and honestly I thought it seemed over the top to get it done. However, now I really wish I had them done. I didn't get a chance to see my whole look together until my wedding day, and there were things I would have changed but we didn't have time. This was with two hair and makeup trials and multiple fittings, just not all at the same time. I felt so rushed with our time at the salon, getting dressed, and getting pictures, and I think I would have had a better idea of what I wanted out of my look, the photos, and felt more relaxed on my wedding day if I already had the bridal portrait experience.

Not a thing in NJ either so I'm not getting them done. Could you get ready a little early and then have some taken same day? I definitely don't see the point in doing hair/makeup/paying for photographer prior to wedding date. Unless you schedule it on your hair/makeup trial day...

It's a huge mormon thing. I'm one of the only people I know who didn't do it. Mostly because I think it's dumb. I don't need a pic of myself and DH in the mountains in our wedding clothes.... also our venue was a dream do we got some pretty pics there.

This is a separate picture session not on your wedding day right? It's my understanding these are more of a southern tradition, in MN I'd never heard of them. I did opt for full day coverage with my photographer so I'll get lots of photos day of.

I'm not getting them done, and it's not common where I'm from (southern New Jersey). In fact, I had no idea that they existed until I started planning my wedding

It is very common in the south! Usually the bride does her bridal session a few weeks to a couple months before the ceremony and a large canvas of one of the shots is displayed at the reception. It's going out of vogue in my circle (I haven't seen it done in a few years) but it was once traditional. I didn't have bridal portraits done, but I was planning on it. I may still but not before our reception (probably the day of) just to have them because I think they're beautiful! Maybe your photographer has a package deal that includes or you could swap something out for them since they seem to be so important to your family.

ETA: a close friend from growing up was a ballet dancer and majored in dance in college. Hers were ballet themed and they were absolutely stunning.

I had never heard of them before WW either. I will/did not get them done. For me it seems like a waste of money, but hey if you have room for it in your budget go for it..

Side note I like your avatar, very pretty Smiley smile also forgot to mention my friend that is doing bridal portraits is doing her hair and makeup trial that day so I guess it's a good way to see your whole look. However, she's paying full price for the trial and another $350 just for bridal portraits. They're having her hike to the top of a mountain in August in the south to do them. Blows my mind.
