has anyone attempted to make their own wedding invitations?

Michelle , on April 4, 2012 at 11:30 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 28

Has anyone tried their hand at diy wedding invitations? how did they turn out? were they elegant? what was the style you were going for and did they turn out like you had expected? i have a few templates that I made on my computer and showed a few of my family members... all of which are verrry critical people. they all loved what i had come up with which was verry surprising to me. my fh and i went out to the local staples and picked out very nice cardstock, professional ivory envelopes, as well as smaller return cards and return envelopes AND very nice foil envelope seals. what are your thoughts?! has anyone dode this and how did they turn out? any pics?

Oh yes, I definitely made my own pocket invitations. They came out exactly how I wanted them.

It's kind of a hit-n-miss you know? Either you have too much or not enough. Can you post a pic of what you are doing? Or an inspiration pic? I love anything DIY, even if it's not that great. I like the effort and ideas behind it Smiley smile

I also included this shell on a more simplistic version. because we are getting married in key west everyone thoguth something more bold and fun would be nice. i perfer the shell because it adds a little more ... umph or taste even to the inviets lol

I like them both and your invites should reflect the type of "feel" you are going for at your wedding. If you want simple elegance, you go with the shell, if you want party/fun/bold, you go with the first pic. Smiley smile Know what I mean?

Also, just a tip on the shape of the invite - square ones usually cost more to mail so I would suggest rectangle (just in case you were thinking it Smiley smile)

I was about to make mine...all glued and stamped and such but then i found a perfect image online and was able to use it on a site where i designed my invite and everything ended up costing less than if i had made them.

I made my own. It was a huge intertaking! It wasn't difficult, but it was very time consuming. Between the designing, cutting, assembling, and everything- I spent about 4 hours. And I only made 30 invitations.

I did love mine, but in retrospect- I wished I had shelled out the cash to have them done by someone else.

We made ours. FH designed them on Photoshop and we printed them on plain cardstock, cut them and I added the ribbon to the top. We made our RSVP postcard style so we would not need an extra envolope with them and we just typed up a plain reception card that explained the events vaguely. I didnt care to have the fancy folder type invites. All together for my invites it was like 25-35 dollars.

I love invitation threads. Smiley smile

I say find some samples you love, go to dafont.com and istockphoto.com and download fonts and flourishes that go along with those sample designs, and then start playing around. That's what we did. Our inspiration photo was this very fancy letterpressed invitation kit I saw in Martha Stewart Weddings. We played around with different layouts by sketching and using photoshop, then FBIL helped us make it happen in some other design suite (he's a graphic designer) and voila. DIY invitations.

We also used www.cardsandpockets.com. I highly recommend their print shop. Their prices are decent and their customer service was amazingly helpful. We had the cards printed, ordered the pocketfolds, backings, and envelopes, and then I cut all the enclosures to size and assembled them. It was so easy. Just took some time.

I got kits at Michael's and printed our own. I figure that a lot of our guests would just throw out the invitation afterwards so I didn't want to sink hundreds of dollars into the invites. Everyone complimented us so far on how cute they were.

I made my own invitations. I had come up with a design for it for getting inspiration from a variety of different invitations that I saw and liked (etsy, pinterest, etc). When I decided on the general format for my invites, I ordered all my supplied from paperandmore.com. One of the reason's that I loved paper and more was because of their cutting service. You order the paper in packs, and you can pay $5 per pack and they will cut it to whatever dimensions you want. I had ordered 2 packs of paper and for $10 they were all cut to exactly the size that I wanted and saved me SO MUCH time. Plus, you can barely buy a half decent sized paper cutter for 10 dolars. I also ordered pockets and envelopes which were wonderful quality.

I designed my invitations in photoshop and printed them myself at home.

These were my final invitations. All paper (invites, pocket, & envelopes) is linen cardstock which I love.

I made ours as well. I was going for simple, but not too simple. I really like how they turned out.
