Halloween weddings!!! What can we do to give our wedding a cool Halloween vibe without making it feel cheesy or overdone?

Krystal Ann, on June 8, 2018 at 10:11 AM Posted in Planning 0 28
Justin and I are having a Halloween wedding next Halloween in Amite City, LA at the Blythewood Plantation. Our wedding theme is Victorian gothic Interview With The Vampire. I have a vision of what I want our wedding and reception to look and feel like. Justin and I have talked about our wedding and reception and we've talked about we want our wedding guests to feel while they enter our wedding and reception venue. Conveniently enough, our wedding and reception are both going to be held at Blythewood. We're going to have what the staff at Blythewood Plantation, which just so happens to be a very nice Bed and Breakfast, a "weekend wedding". I'd love to give our wedding and reception a bit of a Halloween vibe without making everything feel cheesy or overdone. There will be some children, though I'm not exactly sure how many at the moment, who will be attending the wedding with their parents. Since I'm trying be considerate and to include everybody in the festivities, I was thinking along the lines of putting out bowls of candy, having tables set up for the kids with Halloween theme coloring pages and a few other Halloween activities that are geared toward children as well as adults. Does anybody have any ideas as to how I may be able to do this?

Lots of deep, dark colors (burgundy, purple, black) will give it that gothic vibe without going over the top. Candelabras on the tables, deep-colored roses, things like that. Maybe if you want to do a candy bar for guests so it's kind of like trick-or-treating?! You're living my dream, I wanted a Halloween wedding but my FH wanted it in summer, so we settled on early October so it's a fall theme now lol. Can't wait to see pictures of yours!!

The thought of doing a candy bar did cross my mind. I'm just wondering if having a candy bar along with the wedding and groom's cakes will be to much. I also want the children to feel included by having Halloween-themed coloring pages and maybe a few Halloween-themed games for the children and adults. Do you have any cute ideas for this?

I agree with this. Black lace is also very pretty and classy. It'll be a subtle nod to Halloween. Our date is October 27th and we decided to do a Harlem Renaissance Theme. Our "dress code" is flapper and dapper and we encouraged our guests to dress for the period. The venue will be set up like an Art Deco Style Speakeasy. We figured that would be a fun way to do Halloween weekend without the Halloweeniness. LOL

I don't think it'll be too much, we're doing a traditional cake, then a chocolate fountain and a Viennese hour. The coloring pages sound like a cute idea! Are you planning on having the kids at the tables with the adults or a separate area for the kids? Maybe you could set some things up like pin the stem on the pumpkin or "bobbing for apples" where instead of using their mouth and having a bucket full of apples (even for adults I always found that a little weird lol), you can color some fake pumpkins and whoever reaches in and finds a gold one or something like that wins a little prize

We are having the groom's cake at our rehearsal dinner. Then having a small cake, cupcake and a dessert table (with take out bags like favors) at the reception.

I am going to be including lots of burgundy and black lace in our decor elements. Since there are so many warm gold wood tones in the wedding venue, I'm also going to also be spray painting about ten white candelabras with gold spray paint. I'll be buying the candelabras from Hobby Lobby. I'm not sure if using black candles dripped with red candle wax in the candelabras would be too over the top. What's your opinion?

I love the candleabra idea. I feel like the red wax idea is very Halloweeny...It could also be a little creepy for the kiddos. I would skip that one. You could do some cool uplighting though to give that red hue to the room. I think that would be more subtle.

I want to do a separate area for the kids, but they won't be required to stay in the area if they don't want to. I was thinking of having the kids area set up with coloring pages, Halloween goody bags and a few different activities set up for them. The thought of having another area set up with five or six games for everybody who will be at the wedding has also crossed my mind. I like the idea of coloring the fake pumpkins where whoever found a gold one wind a prize. I wish that I could come up with more ideas for games that are like the pumpkin game that we can do during the wedding. Do you have any other cute ideas that I could use during my wedding? I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm so jealous I want a Halloween wedding. Halloween next year was our original date but stupid FH had to decide he needed to invite 80 more people to avoid hurt feelings. So we had to change our date. I'm still a little bitter about it.

Okay, that'll work. Thank you so much. I love the idea of the red uplighting. Should we do some Halloween music like Monster Mash during the reception? Or do you think that will be too much?

Do you have any ideas for the prizes that Justin and I could use during our wedding games? Right now, I'm just really drawing a blank.

I can feel the envy from here. LOL. I'm having lots of fun with planning the wedding. Justin helps when he can, although as of the moment, I'm having to wing it. He lost his grandfather about a week and a half ago and he's not been himself lately. But we're having lots of fun with the planning aspect of everything.

Our original plan was have a Halloween party and get married at it. We were only going to have 20 guest. Cauldrons and mini graveyards as our center pieces a Wiccan alter where we were going to get married and instead of cups we were going to order these disposable "blood bags" that you can fill with juice or soda or really any cold drink you like. Halloween is my favorite day of the year I'm sad we can't have the wedding of my dreams.

Also one thing you can do that wouldnt be super obvious as halloween but would still be pretty is place crystals of all types on tables. Crystals are used in witch craft for different purposes as are candles so both would work and not be cheesy.

I hadn't thought of using different types of crystals as part of our centerpieces. I know about crystals and candles being used in witchcraft. Not many people in my family know this, but I am Wiccan as is Justin. The fact that the crystals will blend in with the other decor elements we'll be using is great. It won't be so obvious.

I had thought of doing a traditional Wiccan wedding ceremony, but I don't want to offend anyone. I don't want to reveal my beliefs to my family in such a way.

Understandable. That's the reason we had to move the wedding and make it more traditional because several of the people FH wants to invite are older and would not enjoy my ideal wedding

I'm pretty sure that Justin and I are going to go with a nondenominational wedding officiant. Nobody attending the wedding will be none the wiser.

I'm pretty sire that most of my future in-laws are already aware of Justin's beliefs. He has a lot of nontraditional ink work on his person. As soon as my family meets him, they're going to know that he jas alternative beliefs.

One of my friends did a paint your own pumpkin table for kids at her October wedding. That's something you could do, so they are decorating a pumpkin. Play Thriller as one of your songs to dance to. I think the candy bar idea is fine. Especially if you have bags people can put it in. They can always make a bag and bring it home with them.
