Groom's Cake - Who Pays? - Everyone loves Pictures!!

Brit12, on June 3, 2015 at 4:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 50

I'm not sure if Groom's cakes are popular all over but in the south there's a Groom's cake at every wedding. Normally the wedding cake is a light flavor like vanilla or whatever, then the groom's cake is a form of chocolate cake. My FH's family is from the north east but now living here in Houston and until we were in engaged, FMIL had never heard of the groom's cake,

So my parents are paying for 90% of the wedding, and some of the groom's cakes we have seen the price per slice can almost be DOUBLE what the wedding cake is (depends on all the decorations and icing). My mom was wondering, who pays for the groom's cake? Does she since she's buying the cake? Does FIL's because it's a cake for their son? Do we? Obviously I don't want anyone to spend $7/slice on a groom's cake when our wedding cake will only be around $3.50, so we would pick something cheaper, but I'm just curious, who pays?

I always thought it was the bride, traditionally.

I'm paying for both of our cakes because I want to. His cake is a surprise to him so he doesn't even think he's getting a groom's cake.

    The bride typically would.

Like the bride herself? Like a gift to her husband?? That might make sense!

We paid for all of our wedding and we did doughnuts instead of a traditional groom's cake (what DH wanted). I would think it should be the bride/bride's family since its supposed to be a surprise for the groom.

I'm planning to work with FMIL to surprise FH with a grooms cake at the Rehearsal Dinner. I plan to pay for it but knowing her she will probably insist so maybe we'll split the cost. Either way, I can't wait to surprise him!

We are getting our wedding and groom's cake from the same vendor. It was budgeted in to our wedding budget with everything else. So FH and I are equally paying.

The bride pays for the groom's cake. I live in SC so it is a big thing here.

Um. I am a little confused. Can't someone just pay for it?

Ours was free when we booked our cake vendor. I selected the cake as a surprised for my H.

That's sweet @Kelly, so you'll serve the groom's cake at the rehearsal? Hmm...different but totally awesome!

@Mrs.Pope yes of course someone can just pay for it, it's not a problem. Mom was just wondering if it was a place where she could use the money else where because maybe FMIL would offer to pay for it. But I didn't want to even bring it up to FMIL if it's inappropriate. We will have one just getting opinions.

The bride pays. We are doing a grooms cake as well, however, it is mostly just Styrofoam with fondant, and the top two tiers are real. The rest in that flavor will be a sheet cake cut in the back. It's a truck.. pulling over the cake and spraying mud (chocolate) all over it, lol, truck pulling is a hobby of my FH so its more of just a funny thing for our guests to laugh at.

If your FH's family isn't familiar with the grooms cake tradition, I wouldn't except them to offer to pay for it. I think traditionally the bride/her family would pay for it. But the 'who pays for what' stuff is all pretty antiquated anyway. Regardless of who 'traditionally' pays for anything, I think you should just assume you're paying for everything, unless your in-laws have specifically offered to help.

@Sara, you're right! Assume we are paying for everything until something is offered. Sometimes you just have to be reminded.

I personally think it's rude for your parents/family to pay. It should be something you cover yourself.

OP- In that case I would pay for it since it is a gift to your Husband.

My MIL paid for it because she insisted on it. Usually the bride pays but we paid for our own wedding.

Typically the bride would pay for it and is most often an ode to the groom (favorite team, activity, sport, etc.)

I'm paying for mine and using it as a surprise during rehearsal dinner.

Ahhhh @Kretta that is adorable!! We will see what happens at the cake appointment. It will be the first thing I've involved the FMIL in.
